Ok There are so many Kevin Love threads which all seem the same to me I didn't know where to put this or if it deserved it's own thread.  So Mods please move this to an appropriate thread if you feel it needs to be moved.

With that, Felger and Maz were just discussing something I found interesting.  Did all of this attention Love received this weekend help or hurt?  In other words, Is he the type of guy who like privacy or is he OK with every move he makes being big news and trending on the internet?  I don't know either way and I am only asking the question.

His entire trip was documented this weekend.  Is he OK with that kind of attention and that kind of scrutiny?  We have sen many a player come to Boston (and New York for that matter) and not be able to deal with it.  Was he turned off by it?

Or doe she have a lot of his uncle in him and crave the spot light.  Was toiling away in anonymity in Minny a bad thing?

He's 25 years old and single.  Is he going to want every time he goes to a bar to be telegraphed all over the place?  Larry Bird used to stay home all the time and never came out except to go to practice or a game.  When he went out to mow his lawn he had an audience.  Is Love OK with that kind of thing?

Will he think this is great they really want me and then after the first season get fed up with it and decide he's better off in L.A. where he won't even be the biggest star on his own team, never mind in town?

I have no idea how he feels about this.  I am just posing the question.

What? Tom Brady, arguably the biggest sports celebrity ever, doesn't seem to have a problem living in Boston.

Love will also not be the biggest star in town. Boston is a Redsox, Patriots town first and second, Bruins/Celtics third/fourth. He will not have to worry.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I'd have to say that this particular trip helped. Everybody wants to feel wanted and seeing all of the sports superstardom in Boston probably opened his eyes a bit.

That being said, if the Cs have a bad year next year and scrutiny from the media takes over, I could then see it taking a turn for the worse.

It's up to him, but from my perspective he certainly seemed to enjoy the weekend/city/attention and wasn't opposed to people posting pictures or engaging with him. It was surprising to me. I don't expect the trip was a negative. He seemed to welcome the idea of doing a tour and getting to know the people / city.

In all honesty, he could've flown more under the radar if he wanted to. It was a calculated move to do things so publicly.

I think he ate all the attention up.

I never understood this. I can see the Redsox but the Celtics should be higher on the important list. Boston has one of the greatest sports franchisee ever and it plays second fiddle to the Patriots?

Football is mindboggling massive in the US. Like, people say that all the time, but it is staggeringly popular.

Consider: The first night of this year's NFL Draft pulled in more ratings than both NBA playoff games that night, combined. And the NFL Draft is mega-boring.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree.

Also, Kevin Garnett become a huge celebrity in Boston despite the fact that he's a fiercely private guy. If Kevin Love comes to Boston and he's as engaging and interactive with local fans as he was this weekend, he will be a huge star. Probably not Tom Brady status right away but if the team wins enough, anything is possibleeeeee!

Maybe in the 80's, but for the past two decades? It's the Patriots over Celtics.

It is a fair question, but Id be inclined to say that it helped. Assuming he didn't have a bad experience with a fan (and there is nothing to indicate that happened), it showed him how supportive Boston fans are. I mean - the Celtics are the talk of the town today and they didn't crack 30 wins last season. He was welcomed with open arms by fellow athletes and people walking around the streets. He certainly didn't make his presence a secret (probably harder to do when you are 6'10" anyways) and seemed to be smiling in every picture you saw. I'm glad he came because he got a chance to see how universally 'loved' he will be from Day 1 and how important the Cs are to Boston sports history. DA has proven he can transform a losing team to a winning team in a hurry and he is loaded with assets to do it again. I'm sure that point has been made to him - he will be in the playoffs next season if he comes here.

But no - the attention didn't hurt. He plays in a small market now, but he has been linked to big market teams like LA, Chicago, GS, and NY. I don't think he is afraid of the bright lights.

Too much smoke to not be a fire - Im fully on board the Love boat.

He's not single, his girlfriend lives in LA. But I don't know who wouldn't want to be treated like a rockstar? Free beers every place he goes to around town, etc. Yes it can get annoying if you want privacy, but I dont think he was really expecting privacy going to a bunch of public Boston bars...
