I don't really understand how Splitter is that overpaid. His per 36 numbers are 13 and 10 -- he just plays 22 minutes a game, because he's on San Antonio and that's how they roll. He gets more assists than turnovers, doesn't foul all that much, and hits free throws decently. He's a decent big. Yes, he's getting paid $10 million this year, but his contract was smartly front-loaded because the Spurs had room to do so, and it decreases every year. He does a lot of things well.
I think some people get get too concerned about contracts between mid-level and max. You can try to go stars and scrubs, but not every team can do that, because there are only so many stars out there who are so good that you don't need solid role players. If you're not stars and scrubs, having those players who are good at a lot of things but great at none is a viable way to build a team. I know it seems like a lot, but making $8-10 million is generally the third or fourth highest salary on a team. It means you're not a star, but you're a good player. This applies to Splitter.
