Also, the book on Smart says:

Quote
Struggles mightily on jumpers when guarded. Release slowed by bringing the ball down to his knees before rising up and releasing.

While the jumper looks smooth in this video, I don't see anything that's addressing the issues pointed out above.

  • Intensity!!!
I'm a big fan of smarts intensity. He'd be an interesting back court mate to Bradley. Not sure I can get on board with a rondo and smart backcourt.

Those that use Smart's lack of shooting as a reason to avoid drafting him aren't well-informed.

Point guards that have been (or still are) below average shooters:

Parker
Wall
Rondo
Westbrook
Conley
Ellis
Teague
Lowry
Bledsoe
Carter-Williams

Even Chris Paul has been a slightly below average 3PT shooter throughout his career. What makes these players successful is their ball-handling, speed, IQ, competitiveness, and ability to use those skills to get where they want to get to make plays (whether that's shoot, pass, or draw fouls).

At 6'3"-6'4" on a 227 pound frame, Marcus Smart will be a constant mismatch for opposing guards. He's going to bully opposing PGs and speed past opposing SGs on the offensive end and still be able to guard either position at a high level on the defensive end. Also, his best attributes are among attributes the Celtics sorely need... the ability to draw contact and using that ability in conjunction with his playmaking ability to closeout games.

Smart is the pick at 6... only Saric should be considered aside from him at 6.

eh...I dunno, every time I see him---he somehow reminds me of Marcus Banks...I'd rather have Gordon or Vonleh....don't wanna waste another pick on a Guard...Rather trade down with Charlotte  (9th & 24th picks)....and Pick McDermott...and Trade up from 17, to take Stauskas.
With Pick 24, take Nurkic or Payne.

Danny WILL do something Creative on draft night....won't he---?

yup. It's still the same. It's a routine he has established since he prob started to shoot and it will be tough to break away from. Or if he does his shot won't go in consistently

without a shot , like a Dwade, he may have to crash the basket consistently. Falling down left and right trying to get difficult shots off/off the backboard. No way he can do this for a long period of time and will get injured sooner or later

I'm seeing so many posters who are absolutely in love with this guy.  Why???  I seriously do not get it.  What attribute of his really jumps out to you?  His strength?  This isn't football, so that doesn't impress me.  Competitiveness?  Ummmmm, what?  All these kids have played in D1 programs at the highest level.  Are they not all competitive?  Does Marcus have a competitiveness "score" that is so much higher than the other draftees that warrant picking him at 6?  If that's the case, what is his score?  What are the other players' scores?

I know this isn't really anybody's job, but I'd really like someone to "sell me" on Marcus Smart.  Because I want to get on board with him as the pick, since so many of my fellow fans love the guy.  But none of the comments I've read in this thread or the other threads tell me why they love him other than his physical strength and his competitiveness.

I'm no expert but I am a fan of his and one thing that I envision is a serious matchup advantage.  This includes his strength as well as his speed.  I believe he had a very good lane agility time at the combine.  Faster than Wall, Westbrook and CP3.  Someone that strong at that speed will be a handful all game long.  I hope that it would wear down the opposition.

I am not overly concerned with the shot because it is something that can improve.  Especially on this team and with the shot doctor on the staff.  Bradley seems to be evidence of that.

I would be happy if the Celtics got him but I have to admit, the earlier mention of Marcus Banks is a sobering thought.

Here's an interesting list of pre-draft measurements of all PGs.

http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-pre-draft-measurements/?year=All&sort2=DESC&draft=0&pos=1&source=All&sort=4

Recent analogs to Smart's metrics: Mardy Collins, Tyreke Evans, and Iman Shumpert.

Luckily for you, seeing as how you don't like him, I just don't see how Utah passes on him. He's just too good a finisher/play maker. Not to mention has All NBA Defense potential.

don't crucify me for saying this but, can I say mini-Lebron James but at a pg position or sg position. I mean when you look at Lebron, beside his talents, you're looking at a 6'8" 250 SF who is fast, quick and will run you over like a tank.

Marcus Smart - 6'4" 227lb, not the fast, not the quicker, but very strong and will probably run over his matchups? Sign me up I guess

And to competitiveness, I don't entirely agree. Yes, most D1 athletes are competitive, but with Smarts, I see fire compare to other athletes. He wants to win and will give 110% to see it happen. I've been following him since last year, and his jump shot has improved. Which prospect wasn't flawed for the draft and has since improved.

I am high on the top3, but since we fell out of the top 3, Smarts is on the top of my list

He gave 110% throughout the game in every game I've seen him play.  His desire to win is evident on the court.  His playing style is similar to a shorter, stronger Dwyane Wade (including the flopping). He can distribute the ball like a point guard, play off the ball, post up, and drive to the rim without fear of contact.  He's a tenacious defender, good rebounder for his size, and chases after loose balls.

I think the questions are: is he a 1 or 2, his shooting, and his shot selection.  I think he can play point guard.  If we trade away Rondo, I think he'd be a good pick for the Celtics.  If we keep rondo, I'd rather go in another direction.

I will attempt to link Draftexpress Youtube "Wiggins vs Smart 2014 matchup video."

The purpose is to watch a top draft prospect actually playing basketball in a "big" game against another top draft prospect.

I don't care if a guy can dunk against an inferior player....which takes care of 97.9% of all Euro league highlight videos.

Smart is a big gamer. This vid shows us Smart defending Wiggins. Wiggins looks like he's 19, but, is an extraordinary talent. Smart shuts him down, which he should do, he is a more experienced player.

Smart will improve offensively, but, does Ainge want a "developmental offensive player?" Olynyk was marketed as one of the most "polished" offensive players in last year's draft.

I can see why Marcus smart has many fans....is Ainge one of them?

My guess is Ainge trades the pick...somehow.

At the :38 second mark Danny Ainge is seen sitting over in the corner giddy as heck (black vest, blue shirt).

This kid is a flat out steal at #6.

the way the NBA game is called nowadays, Smart's flopping skills and his aggressiveness at taking it to the basket are two major factors that will make him a very successful NBA player imo.

He's really slow for a PG. Doesn't shoot good enough to be an SG. Slow release too. I see bust potential.
