This coming season's salary cap is at 63.2M and tax line at 77M.

BOS sends 6th pick, Bass, Wallace, and Sullinger for Kevin Love
Melo signs with BOS for $15M/yr (he said he'd take a pay cut. you can also offset tax apron room or a little off of Bradley for extra M's if needed)
Gortat does a Sign and Trade to BOS for $9M, sends Jeff Green to WAS
Bradley resigns for 6.5M/yr
Pierce signs with BOS for 5.3M MLE
I'd like Napier for our pick at 17, though that may be high.
Trade J. Anthony, C. Babb + 2015 Clippers 1st rounder (and maybe SAC 2nd rd) to SAS for M. Belinelli
Bayless resigns at vet min

Rondo / Napier or Pressey / Pressey or Napier
Bradley / Belinelli / Bayless
Anthony / Pierce / C. Johnson
Love / Olynyk / (empty)
Gortat / Faverani / (empty)

What do you guys think?  For the empty slots i'd see if somebody like Steimsma would like to sign for the vet min or part of the MLE for big depth.

Salary Numbers:
Remember Green, Wallace, Anthony, Bass, Babb and Sullinger are all traded in this scenario.

Rondo      $13,000,000.00
Bradley      $6,500,000.00 (Bird Rights)
Anthony      $15,000,000.00
Love      $15,719,063.00
Gortat      $9,000,000.00
Napier      $2,000,000.00 (Rookie)
Belinelli      $2,873,750.00
Pierce      $5,000,000.00 (MLE)
Olynyk      $2,075,760.00
Pressey      $1,000,000.00
Bayless      $915,000.00 (vet min)
Johnson      $915,000.00
Faverani      $2,000,000.00
(empty)
(empty)

Total: $76,303,573.00

Salary without exceptions: $61,583,573.00

EDIT: changed to take into account salary cap and exceptions, changing Bayless from 2M to vet min.

Melo has said he'd take a pay cut to win a ring.

How?  It's not that high over the tax line not even 100K over.  I think ownership wouldn't mind going a little over the tax line with a roster that's going to contend and possibly win a title.  It's not like we're going full prokhorov.

Also think about merchandise and attendance sales from Melo and Kevin Love, on top of the kind of sales in merch Rondo brings in.

Keep in mind also that you need to be over the tax line (with the MLE included) to use the full MLE totaling 5.3M, which u can split up.  Adding vets later would add on, but like I said, I don't think ownership would complain if we could seriously contend, which this roster could do.

Melo has said he'd take a pay cut to win a ring.

I think he's envisioning taking a pay cut down to maybe $20m.

Also, if you clear the cap space to sign Melo as a free agent, you'd have to renounce the Bird rights to Bradley.  If you think otherwise, do the math and show me.

Melo has said he'd take a pay cut to win a ring.

I will believe it, but that's a huge chunk of money he's going to lose. Even if we land Kevin Love on this proposal,   I think he'd rather go to Chicago, a contending team and his addition could put them on the top, and get paid more.

I believe that he will take a pay cut, but if he has option to not to, which he may have in Chi Town, he wont. And he's not going to take THAT BIG of a pay cut regardless.

1. The Celtics won't have enough cap room to sign Melo

Rondo, Love, Green, J. Anthony, Faverani, Olynyk, Johnson, the 17th pick(Napier), Pressey, Bradley's cap hold, Bayless' cap hold and Babb comes to about $59 million. That leaves $4 million in cap space

2. You forgot to add the sixth pick to the Love trade and would probably have to add two others, one for Love and one for taking on the Wallace contract.

3. I didn't included the traded player exception in the cap room of $59 million meaning if I did you would have to add another $10 million in salary and have zero cap room.

4. You can't use the MLE and the cap space in the same year making getting Pierce with a full MLE salary impossible if you use the cap space but without the Melo signing Pierce probably doesn't sign here as the chances at a title would be close to zero.

5. If you are drafting Napier, there is zero chance Pressey's non-guaranteed contract goes through. This team does not need nor will Danny keep two raw, undersized backup PGs unless he is trying to tank. This isn't a tanking roster so get rid of Pressey if you draft Napier or keep Pressey and draft someone else.

1. Green's not a cap hold if he's traded to WAS, J. Anthony traded to SAS as I mentioned.

2. Definitely didn't forget the 6th pick, it's actually the first thing listed in the trade.

3. Not using the TPE in this scenario.

4. see below

5. This is a good point.  I just happen to like both Pressey and Napier, but we can either keep Pressey and draft a big, or let go of Pressey and take Napier.  Either way, here are the salary numbers that included both Pressey and Napier:

Rondo      $13,000,000.00
Bradley      $6,500,000.00
Anthony      $15,000,000.00
Love      $15,719,063.00
Gortat      $9,000,000.00
Napier      $2,000,000.00
Belinelli      $2,873,750.00
Pierce      $5,000,000.00
Olynyk      $2,075,760.00
Pressey      $1,000,000.00
Bayless      $2,000,000.00
Johnson      $915,000.00
Faverani      $2,000,000.00
(empty)
(empty)

Total: $77,083,573.00

There are no other holds listed that I can find, so this would be the salary situation.

I may have to go through the numbers again though in terms of the application of the exceptions.

With exceptions and salary cap calculation.  I brought down Bayless to vet min and gave Pierce the full non-taxpayer MLE because we're under the tax line.

Rondo      $13,000,000.00
Bradley      $6,500,000.00 (Bird Rights)
Anthony      $15,000,000.00
Love      $15,719,063.00
Gortat      $9,000,000.00
Napier      $2,000,000.00 (Rookie)
Belinelli      $2,873,750.00
Pierce      $5,305,000.00 (MLE)
Olynyk      $2,075,760.00
Pressey      $1,000,000.00
Bayless      $915,000.00 (vet min)
Johnson      $915,000.00
Faverani      $2,000,000.00
(empty)
(empty)

Salary without exceptions: $61,583,573.00
Total: $76,303,573.00
Play to win.  Always.

Carmelo has a $23.5m player option.  Theres no way he takes an 8.5m pay cut to come to Boston.  That's a good looking roster though.  I wish we could make it happen.

Danny would get Executive of the Century--if he could pull this off.

I'd be More than happy---if we just got Love...and Drafted Nurkic, or used the PP TPE on Asik...Then, PP would sign back--if Danny wanted him---no need for Melo.

Rondo/Pressey
Bradley/Bayless
Green/Pierce/Johnson
Love/Olynyk
Asik/Nurkic/Fav

add a couple Vet Minimum guys....ECF.

Larry Bird was Greater than you think.

I may have to go through the numbers again though in terms of the application of the exceptions.

I'd like you to go through your numbers and calculate where the Celtics are right before they acquire Carmelo Anthony according to your plan, then show that acquiring him is legal under the CBA.
