Gotta love Simmons.  One of us.

2. Boston Celtics
You gotta admit, they sold as high as possible on Pierce and Garnett (three unprotected no. 1s from Brooklyn in 2014, 2016 and 2018 plus a pick swap in 2017) and Doc Rivers (an unprotected no. 1 in 2015 that has a puncher?s chance of becoming a gem if the Sterlings fight to keep the Clippers and every Clipper decides, ?I am suing to play for a different team?). You can?t execute an impromptu rebuilding plan better than that.

Also helping from a karma standpoint: As a lifelong Celtics fan, I?ve suffered through three tanking seasons (1997, 2007 and 2014) ? and of those three teams, this was the only tanker that actually made me proud. They competed just about every night for Brad Stevens, blowing close game after close game because they didn?t have a crunch-time guy. It was the perfect tanking season, actually. I never felt like I had to take one of those 40-minute showers to get the stink off me. Throw in the way they handled Doc?s return, Pierce?s return and KG?s return and it?s hard to say the Celtics didn?t accrue some legitimate karma here. Then again, I?m a humongous homer.

I never thought 3,000 words of Simmons would be less essential than 10,000, but here we are.

Also, this is the first draft after Stern has left.  And we know he hated the Celtics and rigged the draft against us.  The stars are aligning for a top pick.

Good Simmons is great -- when he's on, he's an excellent read. Phoned-In, not-really rushing since he's the boss and can miss a deadline if he wants to Simmons is not.

This is, at worst, the second best column he's ever written:
http://espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/090122

Check it out and then go back and see if the above really holds up to, you know, anything.

TP for that actually. That was a great read. I've grown up with dogs my whole life so it's a bit sad.

But yeah, when you compare that to the above...

What does this mean?

Simmons wrote an "objective" article about why we'd get creamed by the Lakers in the Finals.  He's also launched plenty of attacks on Danny over the years.

He's not "one of us", unless "one of us" means a fair-weather, take-my-ball-and-go-home-when-I'm-criticized resident of Los Angeles.

I've always been a huge Bill Simmons guy. I know his pop culture reference type writing irks people the wrong way, but I love his humor and I love his insight on the game in general.

The Book of Basketball is one of my favorite overall reads (even though it takes forever to get through). I will forever have that on my coffe table or in my bathroom.

I'm glad you point this out because often times I find myself wondering if this guy is actually a Celtics fan.  Mind you, I don't want him gushing over everything Celtics but he criticize and seems pessimistic about almost everything Celtics.  Yet, he claims to be a huge Celtics fan

I don't know if calling his fandom into question is fair when he's already admitted that he's not "life and death" into Boston sports anymore.

Much better to hold him to writing columns that are actually, you know, smart and insightful. Podcast stylings don't work in print.
