With the Love rumors swirling I was thinking about what it would take to build a contender around love. Using the Mavs as a model this is one idea I had. Now let me be clear I dont think I would do deal #3 but it would make for an interesting though flawed team.

Trades

#1 Sully+Bass+ loto pick (5-8)+ future loto protected 1st  for Love [if loto pick is 1-3 no future pick]

#2 Pick #17 and trade exception for Asik and #25

this is wear I question

#3 Green, Bogans and #25 for Josh Smith

Now that would leave the Cs just over the salary cap at roughly 64.5mill with the following roster.

PG Rondo
SG
SF Smith, Wallace
PF Love, KO
C  Asik, Faverani

I they would then have to resign AB (6mill per) and Bayless (3mill per). This would put them at roughly 73.6mill. Next add depth by picking up contracts of Presset and Johnson. This puts the team roughly at 75.3mill and 2mill below the luxury tax. Part of that 2mill (or likely less based on rough math) would need to be used 1-2 vet min guys to fill out a full roster.

2014-2015 Celtics

PG Rondo, Pressey
SG AB, Bayless
SF Smith, Wallace, Johnson
PF Love, KO
C  Asik, Faverani

I find this team interesting as it draws many parallels to the 2011 Mavs

PG  Rondo      vs     Jason Kidd (both ball dominate pass first PGs
SG  AB            vs     Jason Terry (both undersize SGs)
SF Smith         vs     Shawn Marion (both SFs with PF skill sets)
PF Love          vs      Dirk (dominate offensive stretch 4s)
C  Asik            vs      Chandler (defensive anchors)

The big knock on these team would be lack of a bench Wallace, KO and Bayless would be 3 main bench players. The other problem is sustainability both physically and financially. AB and Rondo will both need to stay healthy and playing high minutes for this team to succeed. With the team already being at the luxury tax roster flexibility is all but eliminated. There is also the issues of getting Smith to play winning basketball.

The positives for this team are the fact that they are loaded with talent in the starting 5. This unit should make for the best rebounding team in the NBA. As starters both Asik and Love are double digit rebounds and Smith is a career 7.9RB a game player. Not to mention Rondo is a career 4.6 per game rebounder. Defensively Love is the only soft spot and the length of Smith and Asik should do wonders for covering up for him. This team matches up favorable to the Miami Heat with AB and Smith being about as good as your going to get matching up with Wade and Lebron. Bosh is a mismatch but on the other side so is Rondo.

This idea tho relatively implausible does bring up the idea of modeling a Love/Rondo team after the 2011 Mavs. The keys would be a defensive anchor at center and a versatile defensive 3/4 small forward. If not Smith Aminu from NO fits the mold as does Aaron Gordon or Jerami Grant from the upcoming draft.

Green is a much better complementary fit at SF for a Love-Asik frontline than is Josh Smith.

Isn't Smith considered a better defender than Green? If so, that would be an upgrade.  Green, though, is a better 3 point shooter. Hard to judge.

I think he's looking for a SF/PF guy comparable to Marion's size and strength to guard Lebron, who can also play PF in spurts.  Not that I agree with the choice of player/position there (I think Smith has played horrendously at SF in his career), I think thats the OPs reasoning.

This team might matchup favorably with Miami, but I think they have issues against other teams.  I wonder if Smith can defend Lebron as intelligently as Marion did that series as well and if Asik can be as effective as Chandler was near the rim.

Offensively, bookending Love with two subpar shooters in Smith and Asik makes for problems.

One of those two needs to be replaced by another shooter who can space the floor and open up lanes for Rondo to exploit.

Trades will vary in getting Love and Asik
Love, Osik and KMartin to Boston
Sully, Bogans, Joel, Johnson and top 5 pick, future pick to Minny
Bass and Clips pick to Houston

Rondo, Martin, Green, Love, Asik
Bradley kept for a Tony Allen backup role or traded for late pick
Wallace, Bayless and Olynyk for a bench with free agent pickups
Can't stop, Rondo!

I'm not a fan of Smith at the 3 but with Kevin Love spending a lot of time out at the 3 point line we would have much better spacing than Detroit did when they tried it.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Oh, to be sure. Asik might clog things up a little, but Love would be much better.

Your 2# trade can't be easily done, it would require teams to draft for each-other and trade at next season since the Celtics can't absorb more salary at draft day without going into luxury tax. Oh and the #1 trade requires us sending more salary away. (Anthony and some?)

But it's and interesting concept you bring there. Rondo would likely re-sign for less to stay with that team.
However we wouldn't be in the right direction all that much with the Green for Smith. Now trading Wallace for Smith I can get behind, even if it costs the Clippers pick.

So the trade would be:
#3 Wallace, Bogans and #25 + clippers pick for Josh Smith

SF Smith, Green
PF Love, (Smith) KO
C  Asik, (KO) Faverani

That's a pretty good bunch. If everything goes wrong Asik and Green are expiring  :P. We can still pursue a third star either way.

If everything goes right and Rondo and Smith play at an all-star level again (Rondo will, Smith not so sure), we'll have 3 all stars and 3 top level role players (assuming Green produces, Asik averages what he did a couple years back, and Olynyk develops ) and possibly an all-defensive guard in AB. That means championships. Plural. But I doubt this scenario a bit.
Goal for next season: Top 2 seed.
Say goodbye to: Turner, Zeller, Sully.

I hate the idea of Smith playing SF. I like Green better next to Love. Or we can package Green in a deal to get Asik and sign a guy like Ariza. He's a do it all SF that can shoot the three. Also an above average defender.

The only thing Terry and Bradley have in common is that they're both short SG's. Terry can hit some big shots back in the day and was a great 3 point shooter, so that comparison doesn't make sense to me.

I also like for us to get a more athletic, faster C than Asik. Chandler complimented Dirk so well due to the fact that he was so athletic. Both Asik and Love are kind of slow, and although Asik's a good rim protector down low, I think Love would be better off with an athletic center next to him. If we can go back in time, we should've traded KG for DeAndre Jordan and get Love this year. Jordan would have been awesome next to K. Love.
PHX Suns: Russell Westbrook, Chris Bosh, Tristan Thompson, Trevor Ariza, Tony Allen, Trey Lyles, Corey Brewer, Larry Nance Jr., Trey Burke, Troy Daniels, Joffrey Lauvergne, Justin Holiday, Mike Muscala, 14.6

smith is only effective when playing PF. why would we want Smith and Love? so we can play love at C? do we want to win?

if that's the case then we may as well just stay where we're at and play sully at C and smith at PF and keep our pick.

i'm sooo sick of hearing josh smith being recommended...what's the obsession?

It could be worse.  You could have Andre Drummond instead of Asik.

Imagine a team of :
Rajon Rondo 62.7%
Dion Waiters 68.5%
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist 61.4%
Josh Smith 62.3%
Andre Drummond 41.8%

Once again, that is Rajon Rondo and four guys that I have seen different people in this forum advocate trading for.
