Whoever we take #6 will probably be our best player by default.
I mean, if we take a guy like Gordon or Vonleh I think there's a solid chance he plays less than 25 minutes a night and has an up or down season. The best player available in the 5-8 range will probably be a player who is fairly raw.
Parker or Wiggins -- especially Parker -- sure, I could see either of them leading the team in scoring and making a big impact, though I think Parker will be a project on defense to start with, to say the least.
I think Smart / Exum would begin the year off the bench as a combo guard, perhaps eventually getting into the starting lineup once Avery gets injured and needs surgery or Rondo gets traded.
Embiid will be a project who needs to have his minutes limited at first. Randle would have limited playing time due to the fact that Sully and KO are already here.
So really, I kinda doubt the guy we take with our first would be the best player on the team right away. Best talent / upside on the team? Very likely.
I agree about Gordon, but if we draft Vonleh I think he will instantly become the best big man on our roster.
He can score in the post, he can hi the midrange jumper, he has three point range, he's an elite rebounder and he's an excellent defender. There is no other big man on the Celtics roster with that skill set.
In fact, the fact that he can contribute on offense, defense and on the boards immediately makes the most valuable big on this team IMO, and the fact that he's only 20 means he has quite a bit of upside as well. Plus at 6'10" with a 7'4" wingspan and good strength, he's a very legit option at center.
Right now everybody Boston puts on the court is a liablity in some aspect. When Sully or Olynyk are on the court, we are at a disadvantage on defense. When Hump is on the court, we have limited offense. Bass is the closest we have to a guy who plays on both ends, but his team defensive is poor and his rebounding weak.
Vonleh is a guy who, in 30 minutes a night, could probably give you 12 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks a game.
If Boston cannot get a top 4 pick (Embiid, Wiggins, Parker, Exum) then my next choice would be Vonleh.
