Anyone else think we are lottery bound if they do?   These guys w/o a rim protector won't cut it.

You mention the two teams with the two best perimeter defenders in the NBA. And neither team has a starter as defensively inept as Sully, or especially Olynyk.

your point?? If we get Wiggins or Gordon, they would be top notch all around defenders like George

Also last time i checked guys like Chalmers,  David West are only considered to be mediocre one on one defenders. But they are good team defenders and have high iq's

The point is, you don't necessarily need have to be have a Drummond or Dhoward to be good defensively. Matter of fact Detroit was a pretty bad team on the defensive end

As nice as it is to see their chemistry offensively, we need a legit defensive anchor.  That's the first thing.

The second thing is that, all things being equal, meaning adjusting for Sully's extra year of experience, my take is that on a contender, KO will be the starter and Sully will be the 3rd big/6th man candidate.  Height and more fluid offense.  Sully will be most effective against reserves.  Both can probably play 30 minutes.

The third thing is that they would make a heck of a pair to trade out together for one superstar PF.

But...they're both here already, and inertia is a powerful force.

George, Stephenson and Hill are all competent perimeter defenders, and Hibbert is usually good. He has certainly lost a step or two during the playoffs; but this season he has been one of the premier interior defenders.

Lebron is probably the best perimeter in the game right now. Bosh is decent enough, and they have solid depth at the 4/5. Wade can still hold his own at the two reasonably well.

If Sully and KO start we could see some really interesting offensive plays, due to both having good IQ's and passing ability, but we would be destroyed inside on defense imo

hopefully not. hopefully KO is behind sully at the 4 spot. unless we haul in a great power forward. and a decent center.
LET'S GO CELTICS!

Newsflash WE DO NOT HAVE LEBRON OR PAUL GEORGE.

We have guys that would come off their benches.   It can be done but honestly we don't have that talent.   Of course, it can be done without, the Bulls didn't have a great rim protector but they had Jordan and Pippen and  a guy named Rodman who could all d up with the best of them.

A rim protector makes it easier though.   Sully and Oly are not of the caliber of Rodman on D though.   LeBron can get up and block anyone's shot he chooses.  Jeff Green can get up but only when he decides to play.   Bradley was an elite defender but I think his D went down as he lifted a bigger offensive load.

As much as I love KO and Sully's offensive game, we may as well give the opposition a lit-up path to the basket unless we acquire a half-decent center, and soon.

I think they're lottery bound if they don't.

Adding a legitimate rim protector will improve the team, but the area where the Celtics struggled most this season was on the offensive end.  So long as Jeff Green, Avery Bradley, and Jared Sullinger are the primary scoring options, the team is gonna be bad.

If the only rim protector available is somebody who'd be a stop-gap solution anyway, I think it might be better to just start Sully and KO together from the beginning and see what they can do together.

While you're right, Tony Allen is a better perimeter defender than Paul George.

People say they will be atrocious on D but I think that's a problem with using throwaway one-liners - not everything is considered. You're painting everything with a broad stroke.

Unlike Javale McGee who's dumb or Boozer who doesn't bother, Jelly Sullynyk is a very smart duo that tries on D.

Sure, with so little athleticism odds are there will be times the defense will be simply overwhelmed. But I think their positional defense won't be an issue and there's a possibility the defense might actually be halfway decent.

iirc the 2013/14 Celtics were actually decent in some aspects of defense at the beginning of the season until Ainge (imo) took the heart out of the team by destroying any coherence it had (which I'm fine with, before you nail me for this). What could have come of that roster may have been interesting, even defensively.

Interestingly (and not that this stat tells the whole story, but interesting nonetheless), the Celtic with the best defensive rating on the team last year was Vitor Faverani, our only true center on the roster.

If Danny doesn't do anything to upgrade the center position this off-season, I wouldn't mind seeing El Hombre get the nod as our starting center.  I'd start him alongside Kelly and bring Sully off the bench.

Celtics 18:

What a surprise right? Our defense is better with a legit big man patrolling the paint - go figure...

I think I've seen posts of yours in the past where you've stated the need for Ainge to get us a true big man. 100% agree, TP. I "hate" playing guys our of position (Bradley at point, Sully at center, etc.)

I also hate getting bullied, out muscled - I want "us" to be the ones putting a hurt on teams - make them adjust to us...

Unless Embiid is 100, 100, 100% cleared by the doctors I'd rather see us make a move for Asik, use our hopeful top 3 pick on a great wing.

Asik / Favreani / Jungle Jim Iverson from Turkey
Sullinger / Olynyk / Humprhies or Bass?

Work on the wing positions with our draft picks and other trades / signings?
