True. A walking Rondo isn't without benefit.

But there are NO benefits to the Celtics to allow him to hit free agency. The only legitimate reason is if the trade offers are poor, as they likely will be since Rondo has not demonstrated much since the knee injury.

Which is why he should be given a solid extension offer. If he passes, then he should be shopped aggressively so the potential returns can be evaluated.

Allowing Rondo to play to free agency is a fan-centric move that makes little sense for the franchise.

It makes sense if you think Rondo wants way more than market value and you can sign him for less than the max by waiting and letting the free agent market set his price.  It also makes sense if you want to see him play a full season while healthy before committing more long-term money for him.

I can understand the risk-averse POV where watching him leave (and leave cap space behind him) is considered a killer.

We have other chips, though, but I'd rather keep Rondo, and overpaying a bit isn't the worst thing, provided the rest of the cap is well managed.

I'm okay with letting him hit FA because I'm okay with him staying or leaving.  I know we need to find another ball handler this offseason anyway; maybe we find a young prospect/backup PG for Rondo insurance.

Rondo would be a good fit for the Rockets, but they are bad trade partners...Unless anyone  here is a huge Parsons guy.

Rondo for Parsons is a huge loss in talent.  That's a losing trade unless the Rockets manage to land a top 3 pick and that is part of the deal.  Top 3 pick + Parsons, I'd consider.  Otherwise there's nothing I want from the Rockets.  Asik is not worth Rondo and Harden/Dwight aren't going anywhere.

Again, this is about probability.  You can always come up with some concocted scenario in which Rondo gets traded this summer, if that is what makes you happy.   But it is far more likely that he is still here until at least next summer.  And still very likely well past that.

I think you're right that it's more likely he stays here this summer than not.  I disagree about it being more likely than not that he stays here beyond next summer.

Given that, I'd rather there be a resolution to the question sooner than later.  Maybe it's "wishful thinking" to speculate about ways that a scenario could come together where it would make sense for both sides.

I'd love for Ainge to pull off a miracle trade that sets the Celtics up nicely to compete as soon as  next year, or at least the year after that, but I'm operating on the hard-line assumption that this is a 3-4 year rebuild, since most rebuilds last at least that long.  That's why I think Rondo's future lies elsewhere.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

Ainge won't do that. If the Rockets are not willing to give up Parsons than no way a deal can be made.

You may very well be correct. But this statement could be a lot more convincing if you would provide the reasons for your reasoning. That is, please show the bases for why you believe this way.

Thanks.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.
