Just an obsevation, if the current order stands after the lottery the Cs will be more then likely picking between Smart and Randle at #5. Im predicting a trade down with many teams targeting Smart. Looking at the teams right after #5.

Lakers #6, Smart makes a ton of sense at PG for them. Is ready to play and take some load of of Kobe.

Kings #7, Thomas is good but to small to be a long term solution. Smart can play along side Thomas or Mclemore.

Pistons #8, is jenning a long term guy?

Nuggets #11
, could backup and play along side Lawson ala Andre Miller

Magic #12, If they draft wiggins or Parker they still have a hole at PG

Not sure what additional compensation the Cs get but if they like Saric or Gordon I think this heppens.

Not sure I follow.  If Celts like Gordon, they should just take him.  If they know Gordon will slide to 8 or 9, then sure, trade down.  But that is hard to control.

With the Lakers at #6, I think that's Smart's floor, providing the motivation for the later lottery teams to trade up.

Pistons seem a prime candidate, with Caldwell-Pope as the other backcourt member of the future. Jennings only has two years remaining on his contract, about the time needed for Smart to learn the ropes and take over full time.

...if....

...if, if, if...

The draft order has not been selected yet. Any draft strategy questions right now are predicated on 'if'. Once the lottery occurs on the 20th, then we can discuss this topic. Of course, 'if' the Cs win one if the top 3 picks we won't be talking about Smart, Gordon, and Randle.

If celts are at 5+17 and if pistons are at 8 would you trade #5 #17 and Jeff green for #8 and Monroe sign and trade and there second. Probably still get Gordon at #8

I agree to moving down, unless we get one of the top 3 picks, I'm not a big fan of Gordon.  I'd be happy to trade with Phoenix for picks 14 and 18, I believe are there picks.  This would give us 3 shots to increase our depth and assets.  We could have a choice of Nuric, Staukas, Harris, Anderson, KJ McDaniels, Saric, Young, and several other very good players.

Ainge won't trade down.

He'll trade the pick for immediate help.

I could see him trading down, and then trading the new pick he got for immediate help. And then trading something else plus #17 to move up.

Ainge is liable to do anything come Draft Night.

overpayment.  Monroe is really a PF of which we already have 3 under contract for next year.  Monroe also has some questions about his offense and defense.  he's ok on both ends but hasn't shown he's a lock to improve at either end.

#5/Green for #8/Monroe (not accounting for salary matching) would be about right.  Remember, we're helping detroit by thinning a redundancy in their front court and giving them a solid SF for their lineup.  swapping Green for Monroe in their line-up will make them a much better team.  add Smart with that #5 pick and that's a solid playoff team -- Smart/Stuckey/Green/Smith/Drummond.

This is such a complicated trade to pull off.

Boston would have to select the players that Detroit wanted at #5 and #17, Detroit would have to select Boston's target at #8 and in the 2nd round, and weeks later Greg Monroe would have to accept a new deal whose base year salary would have to match Jeff Green's salary for next year.

Monroe could have a decently larger size contract as you have to factor in the salary from the draft picks and then you still get the 125% in the trade.  Of course the rest of your points are accurate, which means this trade would never happen.

I wouldn't be surprised if he traded down to get a later lottery pick while picking up a player that still has some potential to improve.

I don't see him making the moves this summer to cash in assets like the #5 pick to get anyone that's been mentioned as a trade target.  This team is more than 1 move away from contending and I can't see Ainge rushing to apply a bandaid to this team

There's questionable value in this draft beyond the top three or four picks. Ainge has stated publicly this draft is overrated, and I completely concur.

I don't see Ainge trading down at all to accumulate picks. If he moves the 5 pick, it willi be for a veteran player.

Nope. Monroe won't make the Cs a real contender and he's yet another PF who would require a large contract to even make this deal conceivable from the C's perspective. I'm not against moving Green or moving down from #5, but this would be an unwise move. Moreover, the 17th pick in this draft could turn into a very good long-term contributor.

I'm curious which veteran players you think would be (1) worth the #5/6 pick and (2) would be available for a package centered around that pick.
