I remain hazy on how the trade exception works, but is there any way it can be used to give us extra cap space to sign Gortat who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer?

What do folks think he'll get as his next salary?

We don't get cap space, but an exception to sign a player (or accept one in trade) WITHOUT cap space.

I'd guess Gortat would be worth our full TPE for 4 years, which should be the tail of his peak, and roughly in the ballpark of what Kardashian was paid last year, so it may be possible to get better while staying under the tax but over the cap.

I'm a fan.

Thanks Banners, TP

I'd be very psyched to see Danny make a play for the Polish Hammer this off-season.

the time to trade for Gortat came and went. It was last season when we could have had him for Bradley and he could have helped Pierce and KG out. No use for him now, he's too old for this team

Until the TE expires, there will be a hold against the Celtics cap.

The Celtics could use the TE to acquire Gortat only if he agrees to a contract whose base year would fit into the TE, and the Wizards agreed to sign and trade him to Boston.

I disagree.  The guy just turned thirty.  He could be a nice piece to a playoff team next year that had a good mix of veterans with youth.

I wouldn't hate something like this:

Rondo/FA/Pressey
Smart/Bradley/Johnson
Green/Warren/Wallace
Olynyk/Sullinger/Anthony
Gortat/Faverani/Iverson

To me, that's a "have your cake and eat it too" team.  That team should be good enough to make the playoffs, but it still has plenty of upside, representing a positive outlook for the future.

Plus, we still have those future Clippers and Nets picks.

well, imo, that's the quickest way to long term mediocrity. That team would never contend, and Rondo would leave after next season. KO and Sullinger, plus Smart are not a foundation to build a contender on.

Was there a rumor that we could have had him for Bradley? I don't remember that and I doubt Ainge would turn that down.

there was, and most people on the boards here were against moving Bradley for Gortat at the time.

You forgot Warren.  Also, there are the upcoming draft picks and some cap space on the horizon.  What I've never understood is that there seems to be this argument that nothing is worse than "long-term mediocrity" yet at the same time folks seem to be willing to accept a rebuild for however long it takes.

If we're in it for the long haul, I'd rather watch my team compete while it rebuilds than be stuck at 25 wins for next however many years it takes.

I actually think being a team that has youth, promise, and upside, but also some veteran led win-now ability is probably the faster way to rebuild a contender than continually playing the lottery until we luck in to that once-in-a-decade star.  That really could take forever, and it leaves way too much to chance.

Kudos to the Thunder for getting lucky and pulling it off, but I don't see it as an overall very reliable plan for getting back into contention.

Additionally, a large part of this whole idea is to create a team that Rondo wouldn't want to leave.  I think a team like this that could be at least reasonable competitive immediately, but also have room to grow, would be the kind of team that would make him want to stick around.

Gortat, Faverani, Sullinger and Olynyk? With all due respect, it would be hard for me to come up with a less athletic, less vertical, less rim defending 4-5 rotation. If Sullinger is going to be our 35 minutes per game 4 (and he should be), then the big minutes 5 must be a rim defender. Think along the lines of Asik, Sanders, Biyombo, Vonleh, or Embiid if lucky.

Gortat isn't a big time shot blocker, but my impression is that he's a very solid rim protector.  He's big, he's strong, he's long, and going by his draft express measurements he has a very respectable vertical leap for a guy his size.

Back when he was Howard's back up in Orlando, he built a reputation as an excellent defender.  He was thought of much in the terms Asik is thought of now.  He lost some of that defensive rep when he played for the Phoenix Suns (who have never been known to be a team that plays any defense).

Add in that offensively he's considerably better than any of the other guys on your list, and I'd definitely take him as our center for the next 3 to 5 years.

Why is now not a good time?

I dont see that team making the playoffs even in a weak Eastern Conference.

I'm a Gortat fan but unless we land a big fish number one to add to Rondo and Green, Gortat would only keep us in mediocrity.
