It looks like right now, you can make a case for and against the Celtics keeping Rondo around long-term.

Ultimately, I would support it because it would mean the Celtics plan on being competitive much sooner than later.

Like another poster mentioned, say the Celtics extend Rondo this summer.

After that, would DA not want to complement Rondo with guys he would like to play with?

If so, then would going after Josh Smith and Rudy Gay make sense and if so, would that not be a really good team?

It might sorta seem like the Heat route of having all the friends play together, but right now it seems this is the way the NBA is going.

Most of the talent is condensed into a handful of teams.

Anyway, if the Celts made these 2 deals (see below), I think this would not only return them to contention, but they could end up being one of the top 3 teams in the East:

Celts get Rudy
Kings get Green, Anthony and Bogans

Celts get Josh Smith
Pistons get Gerald Wallace, Brandon Bass and
Clippers 2015 pick.

Also, Celts keep Sully, KO and most of their draft picks

This would obviously be an alternative if the Celts couldn't land a bigger fish like Love, Gasol or Melo. So this would be the 2014-15 opening night roster

PG-Rondo/Pressey
SG-Bradley
SF-Gay
PF-Josh Smith/Olynyk
C-Sullinger/Faverani

That's also not including other free agent pick-ups, draft picks, resigning the team's own free agents like Bayless and Humphries.

What does everyone think of going this route?

In all likelihood, Rondo's not going to extend this summer.

That doesn't mean he doesn't want to remain on the Celtics, or that he's destined to be traded away -- under the new CBA there's no real reason to extend instead of resign.

Right...well that's the key. That was sorta a rough draft of the roster.

It would be nice if they could pick up a free agent center with the MLE (Gortat, Okafor, Hawes, etc.)

  • A true Celtic plays with heart.
1) The reason why the Miami Heat worked is that they had a surplus of bench and role players that could shoot the 3, and defend reasonably well. It also helped the fact you had the best player in the game, along with one or two Hall of Famers/superstars in a declining Wade, (who is still top 5 SG in this league,) and a superstar in Bosh who held his own in the Raptors. I don't consider Smith/Gay anywhere near their level, plus Gay is definitely going to re-sign in Kings. He has already stated how much more relaxed and comfortable he is there.

2) We need a rim protector. I'm tired of when Celtics user say, "but the Heat always go small ball!" I'm pretty sure even OKC can go small ball with Durant, and go to the Finals easy... Doesn't mean that same logic or subjective opinion applies to us. It only means we should focus on defense. When people think of the recent Celtics, they think of Pierce, Garnett, and Tony Allen. Defenders who set the tone for the team, and always made it a priority to lock down opponents.

To be honest, I was a little disappointed. I was hoping Rondo could have pushed the ball quicker, and set the tempo 3/4 of the time faster. We were ranked around 6th or 7th in the league for youth, so I didn't see why we couldn't push the offense, and deny the defense from settling in. We had Green, Bradley, Rondo, and CJ/Bayless who are all pretty speedy guys for their position.

3) I have said it again, and I'll say it again. I think DA is going to go after Kevin Love. All signs point to him trying to create fireworks by offering Sully, who is going to be conditioning his body, and his multitude of draft picks will surely entice the Wolves. Considering the fact the Wolves have a new GM, (lol how many times have I said Kahn!) and won't make any more draft pick blunders, (I hope for their sake,) and at least draft considerably well, and NOT FOR position! They must at least entertain the possibility of getting a young PF in Sully, and maybe a few players along with the draft picks we can offer.

I really wanted us to clear cap space, and go after Lance Stephenson, but after the brawl between him and Evan Turner... I'm definitely leaning towards no.

I feel like Stephenson and Rondo would argue or fight a lot especially if either person blows defensive assignments, or don't get in position quickly enough.

I would like us to go after Asik too.

From SF/SG we can decide depending upon what assets we still got left to work with.

I think Love/Asik will be on our team. And I would take those two over Gay/Smith any day. I'm a huge Smith fan, but I think his time on the Celtics have worn its welcome.

The "big three" is this scenerio simply isn't good enough either way.  In fact, the best of this big three is worse than the worse of miami's big three.  So no thanks.

This would be a horrible team. Miami had three all stars in their primes. We would have Rondo and two chuckers who has low BBIQ. Don't even know if this is good for an 8th seed in the East.
PHX Suns: Russell Westbrook, Chris Bosh, Tristan Thompson, Trevor Ariza, Tony Allen, Trey Lyles, Corey Brewer, Larry Nance Jr., Trey Burke, Troy Daniels, Joffrey Lauvergne, Justin Holiday, Mike Muscala, 14.6

Too many PF's and no "star" players.  That's not the Miami route.  Plus adding Smith gives you 3 PF's and no Centers (sorry Sullinger is in no way a center).  I would rather go after Hibbert via trade (who will be available), Asik or Monroe and pick up a SF in the draft or some other way.  I'm not a big Rudy Gay fan.

The Celtics analytics department would commit mass suicide if this were the roster.

Celticsblog might melt down if such a thing happened.

I like the idea of going the Miami route but think you need to aim higher.
