I'd rather blow out my knee as an NBA player rather than do it as a college player who came back to school for another year passing up a guranteed payday.

Now my parents could very well tell me another thing....

Coach K. Probably has three more McDonalds All American signed and waiting anyway.

He actually does, Jahlil Okafor (#1, according to ESPN), Tyus Jones (#4), and McDonald's All-American slam dunk contest winner Grayson Allen (#20).

The chance to win an NCAA title with his good friend Okafor is considered one of the reasons that Parker is considering going back.

How much is it worth giving up if you thought your team would be the clear favorites to win the NCAA tournament next March?

I think it comes down to thinking with your head or thinking with your heart.

Ainge screwed the fan base this year by keeping Bass Rondo Bradley and Hump way too long. Regardless of Parker staying in school it's probably a good thing some of these guys stay another year. That way when the Celtics are picking 7-8th this year we don't have to watch LA get the next great franchise player. No way in hell the Celtics get a top 3 pick. None. Ainge put us in a bad position from the get go.

I know many people are hung up on the money end of things here but there are other issues. Parker knows he has an ability to make major coin. He, like just about every 19 year old healthy young man, thinks he is indestructible and just thinks the ability to make money will always be there. But what won't always be there is the experience he can have being a kid at college growing up. He might NEED that in his life.

Yes, there's always risk of injury but time for recuperation and continuation of a basketball career are still on his side. Money sometimes, isn't everything in life and some people come to that realization a lot sooner than some.

4 years in college didn't hurt Duncan, Lillard, David West, Hibbert Brandon Roy or David Lee from earning big bucks in the NBA. 3 years in college didn't stop Noah, Curry, Horford, or Deron Williams from making huge money.

I think the whole "you have to leave early because an injury could cost you millions and millions" is basically a scare tactic, especially to those with elite type ability. The incidence of  injuries that end a career for elite players is miniscule and a few million or tens of millions is still a ton of money for someone that hasn't ever earned any money in their lives.

Sure, if I was someone close to Parker or Embiid(who I have heard is also seriously contemplating staying in school) I am advising them to go pro because it is in their best financial interest, but I would understand completely if his decision was to stay in school because there will always be time to earn money later. Lots of money.

No way, except for the 29% chance that comes with the 5th worst record.

Hoping Parker declares, increases the talent we could have the option to pick with our picks.

I've never really contemplated the math, but presumably a guy like Parker could afford to buy a $1M or more insurance policy. Might cost him something like $10k to cover a catastrophic injury.

Obviously he'd make more than that in the NBA, but with a little care would have a nice cushion in place regardless. He can blow out his knee in the NBA next year too, resulting in a helluva lot less money than a 10+ year career.

Because college students that aren't allowed to accept any money and don't have the time to get jobs have 10 large sitting around.

There's always this Green colored way of looking at things.

I happen to think the Celtics will be worse next year than they are this year. If Parker stays, the Celtics might have a better chance at landing him next year than this year.

Just another way of looking at this from a Celtics fan's perspective.

Imagine winning the lottery this year, getting Wiggins, being bad again next year and landing Parker. Not too shabby!!! :D

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
If the opportunity to be one of the top picks arises, you need to go for it. Obviously injuries can play a huge factor, but there is also the possibility that your production takes a slight dip. Instead of being a freshman with a ton of potential, you are a sophomore who is showing little room to grow.

I get Nick's point about maturity and being 'indestructible' and it is important to look at all sides of the equation, but he is a top 3 lock and has his whole life to finish his college education.

If he went to Kentucky, that wouldn't be a problem.  ;)

How do you know that the Lakers are going to get a franchise player?

Imagine winning the lottery this year, getting Wiggins, the Clippers cratering next year and landing Parker with their unprotected pick. Not too shabby!!! :D
