Say we do get lucky in the Lotto and up getting the number one pick and say a team like the bucks or 76ERS want to move up and the agree to swap picks and a number one next year. But we have to eat a bad contract should we do this? Just wanted to get some thoughts.

Have a great day everybody!!!

No way. Why would we trade a 1st overall and eat a bad contract? No incentive in this. Unless Sixers want to include MCW/Noel along with their pick or Bucks willing to include Giannis and/or Henson, then yeah.
PHX Suns: Russell Westbrook, Chris Bosh, Tristan Thompson, Trevor Ariza, Tony Allen, Trey Lyles, Corey Brewer, Larry Nance Jr., Trey Burke, Troy Daniels, Joffrey Lauvergne, Justin Holiday, Mike Muscala, 14.6

Depends. If the number 1 pick netted us LeBron/Durant/Davis, I do it without hesitation.

Anything less than that, I would have to think long and hard, but don't imagine a deal worthy would present itself.

It depends on where our trading partner is.

If the offer is #2 + 2015 unprotected first from Milwaukee for #1, I'd do that.  (I doubt the Bucks would, though.)

If it is the 1st and Wallace for the 2nd (or 3rd) and an unprotected 1st next year, why not.

I agree with other posters that your don't trade down and take on a bad contract to obtain another pick next year.

Also like others have said I would trade down in an effort to dump Wallaces contract. If the Cs land the 1st pick and the teams at 2,3 or 4 really want the #1 then I explore the following.

Assuming the 76ers, Bucks and Magic are the teams looking for #1 and Embiid is the target.

Cs trade #1 and wallace to 76ers for #2-4 and future protected 1st (say no unless they are at #4 and want wiggins or parker)

Cs trade #1 and wallace to magic for #2-4 and Afflalo (magic say no)

Cs trade #1 and wallace to bucks for #2-4 and Henson (bucks think about it)

If we're trading down to 2 or 3, yeah probably.  Not enough of a difference between the top 3 guys to turn down an additional valuable asset.  If it's #1 for #4 and an unprotected pick next year, with no bad contract coming, I'd probably do that too.  This is of course assuming that Parker, Wiggins, Embiid, and Exum are all staying in the draft.

Wallace is only on the books for 2 more years.  His salary slot could be a trade asset in 1 year (what the Nets pulled off with us). I don't think we have to be desperate to trade him.  We can always amnesty him if it was that important.

I think it depends on whether the pick is protected or not. The Bucks and 76ers are very likely to be lottery teams next year, so given pick is unprotected it will be a great asset to have even though we'll be absorbing a bad contract. This is a similar deal with the nets when they sent us wallace and others along with unprotected picks, as Danny somehow envisions the nets may end up being horrible and land us free lottery picks. It'll be cool if Danny can manage to pick up two franchise players through this year's and next year's draft.

But I highly doubt Danny's gonna take in another bad contract as he's creating cap space for the summer of 2015 for a big splash, when superstars like Kevin Love hit free agency. Absorbing another bad contract can severely hinder his possible plan of bringing in another superstar in the next summer through FA. So what matters gonna be whether there are players in the 2015 draft that's on Danny's radar and the possibility of landing a superstar in Boston next summer.

I was thinking of starting a similar thread and was wondering what people thought a worthwhile trade would be if we got the number one pick (and we wanted to compete now).

I think Durant / Davis / Lebron are all obvious choices, but who after that and what else would it take?

A package based around Cousins
Afflalo and the #3
Hayward and the #4
Love and Minny's 1st

There are a million options out there - how valuable is the #1 in this year's draft and would it be worthwhile to trade it in order to compete now?

We can always amnesty him if it was that important.

This is incorrect.  Wallace is not eligible for an amnesty.

I would trade the number one pick if it lands us in the top 3. I think there is a high chance that who we would take number one is not who other teams could get number one. If we can move back a pick or two, still get our guy and pick up something else it's a great move.

As others have stated or implied, "It depends."

I would not do something like 'a 2015 1st plus unloading GW's contract'.

I'd prefer something like 'an unprotected 2015 1st from a probable lottery team PLUS a decent young talent prospect.    The latter could be either a top existing rookie or sophomore or simply a pick from lower but still near the top in this year's draft.

I have to admit, I am very much more interested in Jahlil Okafor, who is the player currently likely to be #1 next year, than most of the players in this draft.   So I'm not entirely dismissive of the idea of getting an extra shot at him in next year's draft.  And there are a couple of other potentially great big men coming out next year as well.

But a shot in the lottery is only that, and to give up taking Wiggins outright would require a lot of mitigation around that gamble.

Absent of any specifics, for now, I'd say, "No."
