Avery Bradley used to tape his ankles before games, practices, shootarounds, etc., but this season, the Celtics guard decided to stop.

“More than anything, I just didn’t want to tape anymore,” he said Friday.

But then Bradley sprained his right ankle against the Heat in mid-January, tried to return too soon after a five-game absence and aggravated his sprain, which kept him sidelined for 19 of the past 22 games entering Friday.

“As a result of me not taping, I injured myself,” Bradley said before he returned to action in the Celtics’ 87-80 loss to the Suns at TD Garden.

I found this strange considering the "injury prone" title. That was just negligence on his part, but he learned his lesson.

Tommy wouldn't like to hear this.

And I agree with Tommy, all the players should tape. I've hurt both ankles multiple times and even broke a bone in one. And I use two types of braces on both ankles. Since then I've haven't had a bad sprain. So there is something to it.

You would think since he's had ankle injuries before he would know that, but he paid for that lesson.

wait does he mean he doesn't like the feel of the tape? because it reads as if he doesn't like taping them, as if he has to do it himself. am i wrong or dont they have trainers and staff to do that?

not taping cost him a whole lot, i would put a rough estimate at $2.5 million.

Big Al must have taught him that trick.

He may think this why he sprained it or aggravated it but that type of excuse is somehwhat laughable.

Even if if were 100% true you seem like a bit of an idiot for all of a sudden stopping in a contract year.

agree with everything said so far. and yeah he looks like an idiot no matter what.

I don't understand professional athletes at all. it's a career(for the most part) that has a small window. why would you not do everything you could to get most out of it and preserve what you should have coming to you?

it's why I believe if you're a professional athlete & you do something pretty egregious the league shouldn't give 2nd chances. like say vick for example.

I know Bradley not taping his ankles is not even close to the vick situation but it's still stupid & esp. considering he used to and decided not to anymore...in a contract yr.

if I were a coach or gm i'd tell 'em no tape no play.

What if Bradley thought he could move more quickly and shoot better if he didn't tape his ankles?  What if that was actually true?

That could be but with his past ankle issues why risk it

It's really hard to be quicker on the floor when you're on crutches because you've injured your ankles for the umpteenth time.

Because he is less risk-averse than Jermaine O'Neal.

Any football or hockey player could move faster without helmets or pads. The fact that you can move more freely without things you wear for safety doesn't mean you should.

it probably is true.

I had a friend in high school who didn't wear his cup at hockey practice and regrets it still to this day.

I've twisted and sprained my ankles numerous times in pick up games. it sucks bad. If I played regularly i'd definitely tape my ankles.
