..and I'm talking mainly about ESPN. Gee, what are the Knicks going to do? Is Carmelo going to opt out? Is Tyson Chandler washed up? Does anyone care?

Guess what - the Knicks are only a game up on the Celtics, and the Cs get hardly any coverage..and they have a tradition of championships and great players. Besides the early 70s, NY has nothing.

Even my NY friends stopped caring about this team a long time ago. Poor management will do that.

They are the highest valued team in the biggest market, so it sort of makes sense.  Plus, ESPN is located in Connecticut.

On the flipside though, the Phil Jackson story is ridiculous.  I'm sure he is dying to come out of retirement to coach the worst team in the league from an asset standpoint.  He would sooner go to the Bucks

Yup.

ESPN is a business.  they do the stories that will drive up ratings and keep people interested.  The Knicks are in the largest market in the country and have semi if not full on interesting stories.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

If they were in the same situation as the Celtics - cap space in a couple years, loads of draft picks, etc..I would be terrified because NY definitely has appeal to free agents. But I know with relative certainty that they will continue to screw things up going forward. So I guess I'll just enjoy all the coverage.

Good points. I know whether or not Tyson Chandler is washed up is at the forefront of every NBA fans mind.

I didn't hear anything about that on Mike and Mike or Colin's show.  Carmelo Anthony was front and center, but that is actually a pretty big story.

Plus Ryen Russillo was on M&M this morning. M&M don't really talk about basketball much, but that's Ryen Russillo's main cover other than CFB.

So today there was likely more NBA talk over the three hours than usual.

except that will never happen in NY. they will acquire their players primarily through trades and free agents. NY is too big a market(or so i'm told) to endure the growth of drafted players. which imo means they're probably going to suck forever but we'll still have to hear about 'em every day.

the knicks are the cowboys(with out the success) of the NBA. they could suck forever but they'll still be the top story on ESPN. therefore watch ESPN in moderation.

Yeah that is a great point, actually.  I am trying to think of a worse city for 19 year old me to live in while making a million dollars a year and being on TV all the time.  In LA, at least people are used to famous people.

Do you really want wall-to-wall national media coverage of Rondo not going to Sacramento?

The Knicks are news in part because they are an entertaining dumpster fire that could explode at any moment.  The Celtics are too competent to be in that position.

This has almost always been the case.

They get historic franchise treatment with out the success of the real historic franchises.

I really thought that IND should have taken their spot as a Christmas game.

The sky is blue.

What about the Lakers?  Their coverage exceeds that of all the teams combined (other than Miami).
