it seems like ainge just set rondo up to look bad all around.

1st off - this thing is absurdly overblown.

2nd - overblown by the organization because you have a guy who's not going to play anyway. who wants to be with his family. we've seen numerous times when a player who is held out of a game doesn't travel with the team. so again why make a big deal out of this? it's absurd to force a guy to be with a team going no where on top of it.

I was really disappointed with rondo when this 1st came out. but now after hearing this. this makes me wonder why? why do this? other than to make rondo look bad. it does nothing positive for anyone.

Given that this whole issue is because Brad/Ainge don't want Doc's policies going forward I wouldn't point to Doc as a great leader while bemoaning this incident.

I don't see how the leakage is doing him a service. Tell him to his face. He told you to yours. He was like "I'm not coming". Then they go to the media? And say it will be handled in house? Dumb.
There's no saying who went to the media. I meant that Ainge's explanation is doing him a service.
Ainge's explanation is a step in the right direction, but Ainge needs Rondo more than Rondo needs Ainge, so this was overdue and kinda dumb in the first place.

Stevens is awesome. There are maybe only 30-50 people on the planet that can do what he does at the level he does, but Rondo...there's only like 7 Rondos (point guards).

If Rondo resigns he'll be doing them a service.

According to Ainge:

Quote
“He let Brad know and he let me know that he was going to stay in L.A. an extra day,” Ainge said in his weekly interview on 98.5 The Sports Hub. “We didn’t think that he should, but [told him] ‘It’s your choice and there may be consequences if you stay.’ It’s that simple.”

So, it sounds like the team didn't say yes, but didn't exactly say no, either, then perhaps leaked the details to the media as a lesson.
The lesson being "You can't trust us to keep private conversations private and later when you hear us say we're keeping it in house you'll know we're phonies"

Wow. Head games with a guy that's smarter than you. Wow.

Are you implying that Rondo is smarter than Stevens? I hope that's now what you meant. If so, you might want to look up the work he was doing, prior to his Butler days, with a major pharmaceutical company in terms of analytics.

To me, this makes Rondo look worse.  If your manager or boss says we don't think you should do it but it's your choice, you may want to listen to the guys that are your superiors.

To me, this makes Ainge and Stevens look worse because they are putting his relatively meaningless presence on the sideline ahead of a chance to be with his family.  And then imposing the 'consequences' of (a) leaking this to the media and (b) not throwing water on the silliness fire until it had burned out of control for over a week.

If I treated my employees like that, I'd probably not be getting a lot of love, loyalty & respect back.   If I knew one of my people had no critical role to play in our work one day and asked for a rare night off to celebrate his birthday with his family, there is no way I would not say, "yes".

Part of being a leader is treating your employees like people with real lives outside of work.

People talk about whether Rondo showed 'leadership' with this incident.

How well did Brad & Danny do?

Quote

I like Rondo the player but he is not a captain or a leader in my eyes...

I guess if you are one of the players on the team, that would be a problem.

Brad and Danny did fine, told him that he shouldn't do it and there would be consequences if he did and he still did it....it's ok to say Rondo screwed up here, I can't believe a guy that has been around great leaders like KG, Doc, PP and Ray didn't know better, kind of disappointing in my eyes...

Probably should read the rest of the article...Danny goes on to say that he probably got the idea because of the culture with Doc and how he took separate flights sometimes and how KG didn't sit on the the bench..lol.

Quote
He added, "These kind of things have happened. We had a head coach [Doc Rivers] that lived in a different city and would take different planes to different cities. We’ve had [Kevin Garnett], who I think Rondo has probably learned more from as a leader and a basketball player and a pro than any other players because he was so young in his career playing with KG. KG didn’t sit on the bench when he didn’t play, and Rondo’s been doing that every game except that Sacramento game and the Milwaukee game, which we held him back [in Boston] because we wanted to do therapy there.”

That doesn't necessarily prove who is smarter.  Just proves Stevens is likely more book learned.

I just don't get the "line in the sand" being drawn by ainge. it just seems weak.

is it the fact that rondo told them he was going to stay? instead of asking? either way it just seems like a battle that doesn't need to exist.

Yep, that "anything goes" tactic worked just great for Cleveland, n'est pas?

Doc's policies were designed to cater to Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. Last time I checked, they worked pretty great for them.

I guess it should be pretty obvious why the management may suspect the professionalism of the current bunch is not sufficient for these policies to remain in place -- given the fact that the team captain apparently thought it was a good idea to throw a party during a scheduled team trip without notifying management until it was a done deal.

I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to. I doubt Lebron left there for all the structure and team rules in Miami.

Lebron left despite all the pampering he got in Cleveland. So the fact that Ainge may need Rondo doesn't mean he'll keep him by allowing him to do as he pleases.

But is he smart enough to figure out how to get a trip doub against D Rose and avoid a totally unnecessary fight with his star up for free agency in a year? Because if he's not this pharmaceutical stuff won't help

Yeah you're right. Better be like "Hell no you ain't spending your birthday with your family! You got a game to play...errr..watch tomorrow! Get with the program. You need to learn discipline like Jared Sullin...I mean like Brad Stevens"

Gotta pick your battles.

Because PP, KG, Ray never did such a thing? I'd be shocked if they hadn't based on what we know of Doc's policies, those three players, and the current incident.
