People that are trying to equate this as not showing up to work are missing a big point. He had the night off anyway, he was not supposed to play. If you are a mechanic, or a bank teller , or whatever, and your boss tells you that you won't actually work tomorrow but I want you to come in and give moral support to other other mechanics or tellers or etc while they work, it sounds offensive and stupid.
I guess the response from the anti-Rondo crowd would be...."Well. What if you are the captain mechanic?"

No, I don't think he did anything wrong. I think that the people who do are projecting what they think about sports as a pastime or as a transcendent activity full of teambuilding and Hoosier-ship and Being Like Mike and all that onto what is, at the end of the day, a job.

I don't understand this point of view.

I understand not thinking that it's a big deal.  I understand the confusion of the system changing under Stevens from what it was under Doc.

But I don't understand "he did nothing wrong".  He didn't show up for work, and he didn't have permission to do so.  According to Stevens, they discussed the matter ahead of time, which suggests that Rondo was asked to be at the game, and skipped it.  Even if that's not the case, he was AWOL, and Stevens didn't like it.

How is that "nothing wrong"?  When you're a professional, you ask permission to take a leave day beforehand.

It's not a huge deal, and it certainly doesn't deserve the media coverage and character assassination that it's brought with it.  However, I think it's clear that Rondo, at the very least, broke a team rule, and showed a lack of (leadership / professionalism / maturity) in the process.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were different assumptions between Rondo and Stevens about what the team rules were. If Stevens expected Rondo to do something that was different than what's been team policy for the last 6 years and didn't tell him that before he missed the game it's not really Rondo being unprofessional and breaking rules.

According to Ainge:

Quote
“He let Brad know and he let me know that he was going to stay in L.A. an extra day,” Ainge said in his weekly interview on 98.5 The Sports Hub. “We didn’t think that he should, but [told him] ‘It’s your choice and there may be consequences if you stay.’ It’s that simple.”

So, it sounds like the team didn't say yes, but didn't exactly say no, either, then perhaps leaked the details to the media as a lesson.

To me, this makes Rondo look worse.  If your manager or boss says we don't think you should do it but it's your choice, you may want to listen to the guys that are your superiors.  I like Rondo the player but he is not a captain or a leader in my eyes...

"We don't think you should stay in LA and there may be consequences if you do" sounds quite "exact" to me.

Wow. Head games with a guy that's smarter than you. Wow.

Pretty much.  Albeit minor in the big picture, Rondo screwed up.

Actually, reading the whole article, the leakage is doing Rondo a service. It appears he pre-planned a party based on the assumption that he won't have to necessarily sit on the bench in Sacramento if he won't play. Granted, it was a pretty poor assumption, but I get the feeling it was too late to back out of the commitment by the time he told the Celtics. Oh well, there's a lesson learned right there.

To me, this makes Ainge and Stevens look worse because they are putting his relatively meaningless presence on the sideline ahead of a chance to be with his family.  And then imposing the 'consequences' of (a) leaking this to the media and (b) not throwing water on the silliness fire until it had burned out of control for over a week.

If I treated my employees like that, I'd probably not be getting a lot of love, loyalty & respect back.   If I knew one of my people had no critical role to play in our work one day and asked for a rare night off to celebrate his birthday with his family, there is no way I would not say, "yes".

Part of being a leader is treating your employees like people with real lives outside of work.

People talk about whether Rondo showed 'leadership' with this incident.

How well did Brad & Danny do?

I guess if you are one of the players on the team, that would be a problem.

I don't see how the leakage is doing him a service. Tell him to his face. He told you to yours. He was like "I'm not coming". Then they go to the media? And say it will be handled in house? Dumb.

Not a miscommunnication, more of a "don't schedule stuff that requires you to be away from the team during scheduled trips before you clear it with the management".

"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."

There's no saying who went to the media. I meant that Ainge's explanation is doing him a service.

Brad and Danny did fine, told him that he shouldn't do it and there would be consequences if he did and he still did it....it's ok to say Rondo screwed up here, I can't believe a guy that has been around great leaders like KG, Doc, PP and Ray didn't know better, kind of disappointing in my eyes...
