I listen to others say that free agents just won't go to the Celtics.
Can someone give me an example of when the Celtics had cap room and made an offer to an  ALL STAR caliber  free agent and they decided not to come?  I say we never had the cap room to even make an offer.

I think the most recent example is David West.

Also, if I am not mistaken, one of the reasons that Danny couldn't land Chris Paul by offering Rondo a few years ago was that Chris Paul just didn't want to come here.

No

The celtics will be fine. They aren't a top 5 lure. (Lakers, rockets, Miami, knicks, maybe the mavs or suns) But who is to say those top 5 teams will have cap space and a nice roster when the Celtics look to make their free agent splash.

West went to a team with a better chance to contend (he was right), Paul didn't want to come here because we had an aging roster and would enter a rebuild soon. Didn't have to do with location

David West initially agreed (depending on who you believe) but saw a younger team and an opportunity to contend longer. He wasn't wrong. (There was also issue with the sign & trade and NO not wanting to take on the corpse of Jermaine O'Neal).

CP3 allegedly had concerns with the age of the core he was coming to and how the contention window was open. Again, he wasn't wrong.

I'm intrigued to see what we can do with a core on the right side of 30 and outright cap that isn't dependent on another team being willing.

The celtics didnt have the same money to offer West.

Young stars didnt want to play with KG and PP during the twilight years because the celtics had no other core players to go forward with. In 2015 the celtics could have a core of rondo, sullinger, 2014 lotto pick, and hopefully another nice young player from the 2014 or 2015 draft, not to mention the promise of all those future Brooklyn picks.

David West decided to join Indiana because he thought they had a better chance of contending beyond just that year.

In retrospect, he was right.

The talent of the two clubs aside, West did follow the money.

It is a fallacy that free agents won't come to Boston. The Celtics have never made a max contract push for anyone. I don't subscribe to the notion that Boston is not a destination point.  Free agency gives us another key to the rebuild. Not the most pragmatical key but another opportunity to say the least.

David West was going to be a sign-and-trade. The Celtics offer was almost identical to Indiana, with an extra year tacked on top:

Quote
An unrestricted free agent, West was deciding between a two-year, $20 million deal with the Pacers and a three-year, $29 million contract with the Celtics.

If David West is the only example then it proves my point. It's not like we had a plethora of players rejecting us in free agency.

It was reported at the time that West wanted the higher annual salary even if it was a shorter contract.  The shorter contract might have even been a plus because he believed he could earn a bigger contract after proving he had recovered from his injury.

Looks like he made the right decision in picking the Pacers right now.

But weren't the Big Three already considered old at that point? Was it Boston or a team with its best players in eclipse that bothered him?
