I'd rather keep Rondo (and Green for now) and look to bring in an established star (e.g. Love) and see how things look going into next year.

Then, this summer, the TPE exception of $10M and the MLE can bring in the finishing touches.

Rondo
Stephenson
Green
Bass (or whatever)
Love

But Rondo is the key piece to start with, the established star that brings the pieces together.

Of course not  >:(
What's the ratio of the 1st picks that have turned out to be as good as Rondo.   >:(

A brief glance at draft history shows that roughly 1 in 3 number one overall picks in the past twenty years have been as good as, or better than, Rondo.

Don't worry, though, I'm assured there are six or seven players in this draft who are destined to have better pro careers than Rondo.

I meant first round picks  :-X

The ratio would be considerably lower then.

If you think Rondo's a top 20 player, then it's 20 / (30 x [insert years])

If you think Rondo's a top 10 player, change it to 10.

I voted yes. I don't think Rondo can be your best player if you want to be a contender.

If we got Parsons, Jones and 2 picks (throw in Asik or Lin to make the salaries work), I'd be happy. I don't know why the rockets are hesitant to include CP in the deal. Rondo as their #3 pretty much solidifies their status as a true contender.

I also kinda liked that Kings deal (Mclemore, Thomas and 2 picks) to be honest.

Yes, but Rondo has already been the best player on a contender . . . twice.  This actually happened.

i remember we had a few nobodies on that team named Pierce and Garnett.

Like what another poster said, i also think Rondo is the ultimate complement. A "super glue", if you will. I recall Miami struggling when Bosh went down with an injury. Now, Bosh isn't the best player on that team, but that's not to say him not being on the floor didn't have a significant impact. As much flak as Bosh gets, he's quite essential to that Miami troika.

I was just going to say that. We could definitely beat Miami without Bosh in 2012. Once he came back, the series shifted towards Miami.

Now I agree Rondo isn't the best player in the world, but you need multiple stars (2-3) to win in this league. You already got Rondo for one star. Why would you trade your only star and make your life harder? Rondo, sign a star or trade for one, high pick.

Just look at 2007. We managed to keep Pierce and got him 2 more all-stars to play with.

Parsons and Jones < Rondo. And their two picks are probably going to be in the high teens, that's not going to help us.

It's almost impossible to get as good of a player as Rajon has been for us.  I'm torn, between both sides, where I'm now worried about his knee health long-term(though thankfully all seems to be going great) and also his age by the time we actually get some high quality players to help him out.  He's been an amazing player to watch either way, we'll see what Danny does...

I remember we also had those nobodies on our 2013 playoff team that set records for offensive futility. They weren't bad players mind you, but does having one best player on your team mean everyone else is a nobody? Players like Pau, Wade or Bosh, Parker or Manu, Westbrook or Harden? Do they have to either be top dog or nobodies?

maybe i'm just higher on Parsons and Jones, who I think are both very underrated, than most people on this board. And 2 first rounders are pretty nice too, especially if they're unprotected or say, top-3 protected.

now, if we are able to land a player like Love, then absolutely you have to keep Rondo. But my hopes of trading for him or signing him 2 years from now aren't too high either.

Anyway, i think i'd be fine either way. What's most important to me is that we are at least on the right path of rebuilding, which is we have picks, flexibility and trading chips, including a player many teams would be interested in. i never really expect a rebuild to happen overnight. i think the 07 offseason was extremely lucky timing (of course, not to discredit DA who put us in the position to be 'lucky').

i was being sarcastic.

and that 2013 playoff team was not a contender.

Yeah, those 50 percent foul shooters who play hard on the defensive end every fourth possession are nearly impossible to find.

Point guards who regularly lead the league in assists, lead all point guards in rebounds/game and make all defense teams are a dime a dozen. Heck, you could probably name 6-7 of them off the top of your head, right?

But how many of those guys sulk in front of the media which is a clear indicator of whether or not someone can lead?

He can only get away with that type of behavior because the owner of the team doesn't know much about basketball.

I said yes, but only depending on the offer,
and since Stevens is going to be our coach for a long,
long time, let's see if he can shape a team in his
image.

I'm not disputing anything you say.  Still, I think most basketball observers would agree that Rondo was our best player in 2012.  And, I think a very strong argument could be made that he was our best player in 2010.

This, of course, doesn't mean that Pierce and Garnett were chopped liver.  They weren't.  They were crucial to our success.  That doesn't take away from what Rondo and the team accomplished in those seasons, though.
