I would only trade rondo for a top 8 pick. In terms of teams in the lottery, our options would seem to be the lakers and the kings.
A trade like that can't really happen until draft day because I don't think any team wants to accidentally trade the #1 pick.
If we could walk away from this draft with Exum and Vonleh, you might have a core you can build around.
But in terms of trading rondo for 3-5 'assets'. That to me doesn't make very much sense. Because we no longer have that superstar to build around if we trade those 'assets'.
I think we would actually find ourselves in a relatively weak negotiating position because teams around the league could recognize that we have more assets to trade, then spots on our roster. We could be in the position where we either let jared sullinger or avery bradley walk or trade them for less than they are worth to our team. And vice versa, we may have to give these players long term contracts to hold onto these 'assets', with no clear vision of the future.
The only point guard in this draft I believe the celtic's should have interest in is dante exum.
My feelings on exum are:
- Exum may be able to play along side Rondo.
- Exum will end up being a consensus top 4 pick by draft day.
- Right now the celtics are slotted to pick outside of the top 4.
- If the celtics snag a top 3 pick in the lottery, the celtics would be better suited pairing (embiid, parker, wiggins) with Rondo.
- It is unlikely that the celtics will end up with the #4 pick and have to take Exum as the clear Best Player Available.
Therefore, it is unlikely that having Rondo on the roster will impede the rebuild in the immediate future. In fact Rondo is likely the best man for the job, because he gives the team a clear identity and if we moved him it would be a long time before the team would regain a clear identity due to an influx of rookies (uncertainties).
