Melo has made clear he is exploring free agency this summer. He has reportedly tried to convince Rondo to join him in NY. If true, this at least would indicate that he and Rondo, friends from the same HS, would like to play together, no small hurdle.

Danny needs to get a second all star player to build around Rondo.  Anthony is an elite scorer and shooter, kind of a combination of Pierce and Ray Allen, with a little power forward mixed in. To me, he is far more desirable asset than Kevin Love, who you would have to wait for another year, and is just not at the same skill level as Melo.

How much cap room would we have to sign him after this season?  I know that Hump comes off the books.  Can we amnesty Wallace?   If so, how much cap room would that give us?  Anthony has said he would take a discount to stay in NY, but that assumed they would build a winner around him.  That is not happening there, but could be here, with Rondo as his partner.  Unlike a lot of NBA stars, Melo is not averse to cold weather cities, or higher taxes.

To me, this should be Ainge's Plan A.  The beauty is that, if it worked, you would still hold onto a very high draft pick that could be used to get a player capable of starting pretty quickly.

What do you guys/gals think?

Unless the Celtics are ready to trade away all those extra draft picks and this years number 1 to move Wallace, Green and Bass, there is no way to get far enough under.

And good teams would not take that chance.

Several weeks ago, someone posted a nice writeup to the front page detailing exactly what kind of salary dumping would be required to clear the space for Carmelo.

IIRC, you'd have to just about gut the roster of everyone not named Rondo and not on a rookie deal.

If we can get Carmelo to come here through sign and trade with less than expected salary demand with the help of rondo's recruitment and then use these two guys to recruit one other superstar to come here, I think we're good.

If there is a possibility to get big stars to come here, then you use them to get those stars. It's illogical to gamble with those picks in the lottery to have a very little chance of contending in the future instead of simply using them to get stars and contending right away.

I just don't see the Knicks ever agreeing to trade him here, even if it means they risk losing him for nothing.

I'm far from being knowledgeable about the cap, but from the looks of it we've got 46 million committed next year, not including an estimated 7 million in draft picks, and what to do about Avery Bradley. From my understanding, if we cleared Green and Bass off the books and renounced AB's rights, that'd leave us enough room for a max salary.

Of course, all this may be turned upside down in a couple of days....

The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

Melo is exactly the type of player that keeps franchises on the treadmill

To be fair if your last name isn't Davis, James, or Durant I think everyone in the NBA is a treadmill player based on your past posts.

He's a combination of iso-ball Pierce and Ray Allen's defense, maybe.

Fun fact: Carmelo Anthony and Avery Bradley have nearly the same career 3P% right now.

You'd have to dump the contracts of Green, Wallace and Bass.  You'd have to let Bradley walk too.  I don't really know how that's possible without including our lotto pick or Rondo.  And only a few teams have expiring contracts to take on that kind of salary.

But it could be done...

You could trade Wallace + Green + a 1st round pick to the Bobcats for the expiring contracts of Ben Gordon and Sessions.

You could trade Bass and a 2nd for an expiring... shouldn't be too hard.

Then you'd have enough money to sign melo this summer.
