As I've stated before, if Ainge is telling the truth about wanting to build around Rondo, then acquiring Smith makes alot of sense.

They draft a good SG in the draft (or resign Bayless for next year if the draftee needs more time) and look to acquire a center this summer with whatever money they have(Gortat, Okafor, Hawes and Aaron Gray are some free agent centers who I'd love to see the Celts go after.)

I would start Smoove at the 4 and Sully as your 6th man, which I think would only benefit Sully.

As for what players to give up, I would package either Jeff Green OR Wallace along with Avery Bradley to get Smith.

Then, this summer they can also go after Gordon Hayward to be the starting SF.

Rondo, Hayward, Smith, Sully could be the core of a very good team (IMO.)

I understand the frustration of Smith's shot selection and style of play, and I would rather go after a Bosh, Kevin Love or Lamarcus Aldridge.

But, if Smoove is the best we can do, I take it.

Maybe I have a little more faith in him than I should.

Any team with Josh Smith, Rondo, and Hayward on it is the definition of a treadmill team. Josh Smith isn't just a bad shooter he's really bad. Rajon Rondo is good at driving into the paint but he isn't Chris Paul or any of the other star point guards. Hayward isn't efficient...this would be a horrible way to spend money on a team no matter what top pick we get in the draft. Need to get younger not older.

I would actually go after Luol Deng or Trevor Ariza instead to play small forward. Didn't realize Hayward will be a RFA and though he's a good player, I would rather have Deng or Ariza who will be UFA's.

I know Deng and Ariza are older players buth both guys can still get it done.

Agreed.

I know this blog is Rondo-obsessed, but advocating the collection of Rondo's friends is NOT a plan for rebuilding.

Let's get the whole gang back together!

*CB Miami Heat*
Kyle Lowry, Dwayne Wade, 13th pick in even numbered rounds, 18th pick in odd numbered rounds.

I am actually not a big Rondo fan, but if the plan is to build around him (per Danny Ainge, not anyone on this blog)
then JSmoove is probably as good of a dance partner as the Celts will probably be able to find for him.

It's either that OR they land a franchise player in free agency (Melo, Lebron, etc) or they draft in the top 3.

I don't see either of those scenarios happening.

While Josh Smith may be one of the more talented players available, he'd be a horrible "dancing partner" for Rondo. Can't shoot, can't make free throws, has questionable decision-making. Just not going to work.

You would have two players on the team that were sub-60% free throw shooters who were NOT centers.

The Celtics would be fouled into embarassing oblivion. You could literally just hack anyone on the team.

If you are shooting 60% from the FT line, your odds of making both are 60% * 60% - or 36%. Pretty good odds that you can hold the Celtics to one point on free throws. Rondo can be hidden, to the extent he doesn't drive in to the basket in crunch time - but not Josh Smith and a Center.

If Rondo could shoot FTs at even a league average level, and if we could get a center like J. Noah, who shoots 72% on FTs, it would be worth considering.

On a related note, the break-even point for someone who is shooting 45% from the field is about 67% from the foul line. For a 50% shooter this number goes up to 70%.

imagine if we could also get asik on a team with rondo and josh smith, it would be funny watching them relegated to the bench with the other team trying the hack-a-rondo-asik-smith strategy. ;D really hoping danny won't even consider thinking trading for smith.
