Sully is already better on a rookie contract, pass.....
Josh Smith is not a world-beater, but don't kid yourself, Sullinger has ways to go before he can be mentioned in the same sentence.

To put things in perspective, Smith is averaging more than 3 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks for his career. He's a considerably more dynamic presence on the floor than Sullinger will likely ever be.

And Sullinger's  a better rebounder who turns the ball over less often than Smith. If not for his hand injury he'd probably be scoring more efficiently than Smith as well. Smith's a dynamic player but he makes a lot of bad decisions that hurts his team and his shot selection is terrible by any standard.

One could say the same thing about Sully with him chucking threes and jumpshots when his hand is injured.

If Ainge wanted him at that salary we would have had him before he went to Detroit.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is false. We never had the cap room to get him.

we had the assets and opportunity to trade for him and then give him an extension. We could have traded KG or Pierce plus a pick or prospect. Ainge was pretty clear that he was not interested in him.

One could, although that would be somewhat silly. Here's the thing, though, Sully's hand will get better. What's going to change for Smith? Also, I'd hazard a guess that Sully's most likely taking the shots that he is with the blessing (if not the encouragement) of his coach. It was fairly easy to see how unhappy Smith's coach was in Atlanta when he was jacking up those bad late-game shots, I doubt things have improved much in that regard.

Sully wasn't draining threes when his hand was not hurt.   It is not his shot and takes him out of rebound position.

I think Smith shot selection is horrible.   But I don't think Sully is a great offensive player either.  He is wily and exposed against true size but usually finds a way to help his team.  Some of it is playing out of position and some of it is his natural limitations.

Why did you bring up his hand injury in one post if you were going to dismiss it in the next? In any case, it's likely that the coach is encouraging Sully to take the threes. He only took 5 all year as a rookie. He's not the best of scorers yet, but he's still young and has a wide array of ways to score. His per minute scoring is in the range of players like Monroe, Ibaka, Duncan, Boozer or ZBo. Expect improvement as he matures.

Perpetually available: Josh Smith.

Why? Lots of reasons. Largest among them: because he's a moron.

And I think the point here is while Sully may not become a """"1st option"""" (God I hate this term), he's far more efficient and possibly consistent than J-Smoove on offense. And will presumably at least maintain this efficiency even if he doesn't become a more voluminous scorer, which I think he most probably will.

Id be interested in the summer. I want that top five pick. So continue to be bad this year but next year I look for Ainge to make big moves.

I expect two additions outside of the pick to be players with josh smith type talent. The pierce TE and the bogans contract can be used to add two very good players. Add a couple guys on a josh smith type level to rondo, sully, a top pick and maybe still Bradley, green, and some of our current role players and we could be very very good in a bad eastern conference.

I've been thinking Gerald Wallace for J-Smoove after seeing the "rumor" (it's Chris Broussard who "leaked" this).

I ended up finding a trade idea, basically:

Josh Smith to BOS
Gerald Wallace to DET
Jeff Green to 3rd team

Maybe a couple of picks from us.

This allows them to re-sign Monroe.

I know Josh Smith isn't great but he's no chopped liver. At worst you turn Gerald Wallace, whose only value to us is in several years when he becomes an expiring, into something that's not completely negative in trade value.

I have never been a fan of "dumping" Gerald Wallace but I think this is how you should do it.

I'm not a tanker but I also agree. This deal would be done in the off-season, if ever. Knocks one year off both J-Smoove and Gerald Wallace's contracts, making them look more appealing. I also don't deny the value of a top pick (though J-Smoove might actually help our tanking "cause", who knows). Being a rebuilding season, I'm a proponent of not intervening and allowing the team to do its thing (giving Brad Stevens and our young players some valuable experience).

Don't take this the wrong way, though. There's about about a 1 in 25 chance J-Smoove becomes instrumental to a championship, or even a somewhat desirable player. Heck, even though there's an opportunity to dump Gerald Wallace here, we're giving up 2 picks. So I'm ambivalent, despite being intrigued.

Not even in the same sentence? Sullinger's career rebound rate is higher than Smith's career high. His scoring rate is above Smith's career average. He's a better free throw shooter and outside shooter. Smith blocks a lot more shots and has more assists (although that took him a few years to figure out). Smith has peaked; Sully is still 21.

He may not have surpassed him in numbers, and part of the problem is Smith's contract, but the idea that a guy who rebounds less, scores about the same, and has been driving coaches batty for 10 years is head and shoulders better... I don't think so.

Wow, still amazed by how drastically overratedsully is on this board.

People bag out Smith for his inconsistency and poor shot selection, but then the uber inconsistent Sully ( who puts up 23/12 one night and 6/5 the next, and chucks up three treys a game at about 27% makes) is apparently an All-Star.

I know Smith has his issues, but he's an uber Athletic combo forward who is capable if dominating on both ends, he's one of the best passing bigs in the league, he's an excellent rebounder (consistently 8-9 rebounds per night over his career) and he's an exceptional shotblocker who can defend multiple positions.

Smith needs to be in the right situation to exceland even thenhe is a risk, but to say Sully is better right now is laughable.Nobody in the league would be offering Sully a $10M+ contract right now even if the CBA allowed it.  In two years time, well see.  Right now? He'll no.
