Retire KG's number so that you can have the contrast of not retiring Ray Allen's number.

Sounds so stupid, but its true. And if Ray had stuck around, and they'd fizzled out and all left this year, I think its way less likely that KG gets his number retired, because basically, you HAVE to retire Ray (in the alternate timeline where he didn't leave Boston for Miami) if you retire KG under that context, and retiring both of them for what ultimately amounted to one title seems cheap.

Pierce, he gets it anyways for longevity and success over the past decade+. KG gets it for the title and the contending years. Ray gets his rings with Miami, congrats, Ray!

If Bosh leaves this summer, does Miami retire his number?  I mean there isn't much difference between KG in Boston and Bosh in Miami in that situation (you know except more titles in Miami in less years).

If Miami had a long history of retiring the numbers of role players and contributors to championships, absolutely.

Miami hasn't been around long enough or with enough success to have that sort of history established.  I mean I can't see James not having his number retired since he is their best player and obviously Wade will get his retired, but Bosh is an interesting case for me if he leaves this summer.  I just don't see him as being worthy (now if he plays another 3+ years for Miami, then absolutely).  I mean this is a franchise that has retired Tim Hardaway, Alonzo Mourning, and Michael Jordan's numbers (Dan Marino's is also in the rafters, but is not retired).  Because the franchise is relatively young a guy like Udonis Haslem is in the top 2 or 3 of a number of categories, but I can't imagine he would have his number retired as he has never been more than a quality rotation player even with the 3 titles (though if he was a Celtic he probably would because Boston retires everyone's number).

Bosh played an MVP caliber season in Miami?

The following are the players whose numbers have been retired by Boston who are NOT in the HoF for playing:
-Dennis Johnson

My bad. I KNEW something didn't sound right about that, but I just blanked.

Bosh and KG have pretty darn similar numbers in Miami and Boston respectively.

I mean KG's MVP caliber season was 18.8/9.2/3.4/1.4s/1.3b

Bosh's best season in Miami wasn't quite as good at 18.7/8.3/1.9/0.8s/0.6b

Of course Garnett wasn't playing with the best player on the planet either.

I get that KG is credited with Boston's miraculous turnaround, but Pierce was the best player on that team and Allen was an incredibly integral part of the turnaround.

I think it this way, besides all the stats

KG and Pierce actually embraced being a Celtics, still WANT to be Celtics. They still "bleed" green until they die. They embraced being here and we embraced them...He changed our franchise by himself. He bought the pride back!

that itself along with his stats are worthy of his number being retired here.

You really think Bosh's best Miami season was comparable to KG's 07-08?

KG was the best defensive player in the league. PER 25.3, 16.8 TRB and a 118 ORTG with .265 win score per 48, a 12.8 WS.

Bosh was a solid defender. PER 18.7, 13.6 TRB and a ORTG of 115. A .170 WS per 48 and 10.6 WS.

He played 400 more minutes than KG and put up similar per game averages. But you're smart enough to know that per game numbers don't tell you how good a player is at face value.

RAPM and other advanced metrics put KG right up there with TD and LeBron that year. Bosh's best year in Miami was around the impact of Rondo, Pierce, and Josh Smith. Solid all-star but not MVP level.

That's how I feel. It goes beyond stats for me. He was a Celtic, and he wanted to know everything about the Celtics. I think he stats are a plus, but the reason his number should be retired is because he brought so much back to this franchise. He brought pride back, when it was gone for so long.

See, I actually think that Haslem has a pretty good chance of getting his number retired with the Heat.

All-Time Team Rebounding leader (only undrafted player to ever do that), starting PF on their 2006 championship team, he's been co-captain with Wade since 2006(?)... I think that, as far as organizational importance goes, he's right up there with 'Zo and Tim Hardaway.

KG and Pierce should absolutely have their numbers hanging .....the image of kG in a Celtics uniform is stunning , with the head hoed high high and serious stare.......I'm for a statue  in the hallways .  .......KG attitude is what Celtics Basketball history was all about.

I was initially mad at Allen ......but he had a huge contribution to our winning ......way more impact at Boston ...than Miami,  where

LeBron is everything .

I would consider now retiring Allen too. .......maybe years down the road.

Bosh played in more games, of course he had more minutes (though he did have about 3 more a game).  Garnett was definitely a better defender than Bosh, but Bosh's defense is always underrated.  Head to head Bosh actually eclipsed KG much of KG's time in Boston (age had a lot to do with it, but even in Minnesota and Toronto Bosh was getting the better of Garnett the last season or two).  Garnett had a better first season than any season Bosh had in Miami, but after that first season Bosh has probably been better.
