Hate to be this guy...

But it could also be a move to eliminate any low ball offers for Rondo. Leaking this puts it out there that the Cs aren't desperate to move him. Place Danny in a better place if he does negotiate a trade. Similar to when Utah came out of know where to trade Deron Williams. The vultures circle when they think a play can be had at a discount.

An extension? Not now. After the NBA system was rigged for years to keep stars from leaving their teams, the rules now make it virtually impossible for a player in Rondo's situation to sign an extension. This summer, with one year left on his deal, Rondo would be eligible for at most a two-year extension. Like Paul when he was traded to the Clippers in 2011, Rondo stands to get the longest, most lucrative deal by becoming a free agent in 2015 and re-signing with Boston.

Well, as I mentioned in another thread, if he were going to sign an extension, it would more than likely not be signed until July, so it would be next year.  And they can also give him a 15% signing bonus as well.  With the bonus, the extension could actually be about 3 years/$51 million. 

It is still not as much money as waiting on a possible max deal...but it might be enough to make him take the security.

Yes, if he waits, he could sign a 4 or 5 year extension (although not sure if he would get 5).  But, he would be risking his value dropping next year.  And if he signs the 3 year extension, he will be 32 at the end of it.  He could then concievably be young enough then to get one more decent, longterm contract.  If he were 33 or 34, that might be pushing it.
