I think this is a trade idea, rather than a rumor.

I hope so.  Monroe isn't a guy who interests me very much.

I was really high on him coming out of the draft, and after his rookie year.  Unfortunately, he hasn't really developed at all since then, and he's allergic to defense.

He could definitely still be a helpful player for a team, but I don't think a Sully / Monroe front court would be all that impressive.

I'm in agreement here as he has pretty much leveled off.  I also think of him as more of a PF than C.
He's consistently played better as a C.

it's true.

The guy is also one heck of a rebounder. He already has a
15 and 17 game.

Rim protection is nice but its not eveything. Just ask Memphis and SA.  I rather have rebounding, especially grabbing most of the difficult defensive rebounds vs having shot blocking presence

Also if Rim protection is so important, Detroit wouldn't be where they are today with Drummond.

Defense is important.  A center can be a good defender without being a "rim protector".  Monroe, by all reports, is not a good defender.  He also seems like he would be due a big contract and I am usually not in favor of handing out big contracts to guys who are below-average defenders.

I wouldn't move Rondo until draft night if needing to move up a few spots, or get a second deep pick.

with the last sentences you just strengthened my point.
So not sure why people here are enormed by Drummond.  The flash is there, the nuts and bolts are not. Maybe it will come, but Drummond doesn't strike me as a guy with high IQ

...no I didn't.  Again, protecting the rim and blocking shots are not at all the same thing.  Guys who block shots aren't necessarily good rim protectors.  Guys who don't rack up rejections may still be great at controlling the paint.  I'm saying that good defensive teams need at least one big man who protects the paint and anchors the defense.

And for the record I agree with your present assessment of Drummond, though I won't make any assumptions about his intelligence.  We'll see if he improves.

i've watched a few pistons games this year and can attest to the fact that monroe is a poor defender. were he on the c's we would have THREE young power forwards who are currently below-average defenders.
and while a great finisher around the rim, his rebounding rate is below-average, too, he just plays a lot of minutes.
i think of him as being a poor man's al jefferson, he's talented but just not a winner.
pistons are in a sad situation, but trading monroe for a good small forward could really bail them out. we've seen the much-maligned josh smith carry the hawks into the playoffs year after year (i thought he was the best player on the court for a good chunk of the c's/hawks series a couple years ago). but smith played as power forward for the hawk, while he's mostly been a SF for detroit. advanced metrics show that smith is one of the best defensive players in the NBA when playing his normal position, power forward. put him at small forward and you get poor offensive production (he gets worse the further he gets from the rim), and his defense goes from stellar to just above average.
i would bet anything that if the pistons trade monroe for, say, jeff green, they'd see a huge boost in their winning %.
it's too bad smith is getting older, and is somewhat overpaid, because he could probably be acquired for a reasonable price. add him to a contender that needs a defensive big man and it might push them over the top.

I don't know why we'd trade a top PG for a slightly above average center, maybe a glorified PF. Rondo is on a level well above average. Monroe is averaging 14/8 this season on 50% shooting. Those are just slightly above average numbers for a center. His PER places him 28th among big men...right after Bargnani.

So what I'm trying to say is, no. No to trading Rondo for Monroe (who will want paid handsomely btw). I'd trade Rondo for a top-3 pick this year. I think Ainge would too. I'd trade him for Drummond and salary relief. I'd trade Rondo for 2-3 young prospects (Milwaukee has Sanders and Giannias that would be tempting). But for an slightly above average center on the eve of his pay day I'd be loathe to trade anything. We'll have some cap space to offer him a deal if we're really interested in the off season. No need to give up assets.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
the trade seems counter productive.
It's like we're moving Rondo to move Rondo.
Not sure why we want Monroe if Rondo isn't here. He's mildy over rated in my opinion. Doesn't do anything Great and will command 12-14 million pretty easily.
Defense is very average at best.
I'll pass. If a lottery pick was included then I'd pick up the phone.

Ainge wanted CP3 for Rondo.  No way in hell he's settling for Monroe.  All these trades that don't have another great player coming back are a waste of time.

Totally agree. Take the rest of this season to evaluate his return and then in July, when they can offer a 3-yr extension, try to to get it done. If they can't work an extension, then entertaining offers makes sense to me.

Agreed. Monroe is not good enough and too much the AlJeff type to build around. Drummond would be another story.

Quote
Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks, who was a point guard on the 1983 NBA champion Philadelphia 76ers, said Monroe can increase his offensive touches just with some vocal assertion.

"All you've got to do is tell the point guard, 'Run a play for me.'  That's easy," Cheeks said.

I'm not sure Mo Cheeks realizes that Brandon Jennings is his point guard.

I wouldn't give up Rondo to get Monroe, but I hope Ainge is making some phone calls to see what it would take.
