Given the Pelicans expressed interest in trading for big men, and having lost Ryan Anderson and Jason Smith to long-term injuries, what about the following:

Bass to the Pelicans and Jason Smith and Austin Rivers to the Cs.

Why for the Pelicans?:Bass is a pros-pro, provides solid rotation minutes in the front court, to address their need. Smith is lost for the season (likely) and expires at end of season. Allows them to move on from Rivers, a draft-bust. Gives them some protection off the bench going into next year at the 4.

Why for the Cs? :  - Smith is just contract filler as he is injured and his contract expires at seasons end. Allows us to buy low on Rivers and gives us one (or if we want two) more seasons to raise his value, and provides some insurance at the two guard. Though Rivers has a team option for 2015/2016, he could expire next year, same as Bass. And if we were not to pick up the 2015/16 Rivers option, overall it saves us $1.5 mill in cap space and salary.

Works in the trade machine, with the "Hollinger Analysis" having it cost us two games this year and leaving the Pelicans unchanged.

Pelicans need frontcourt help BADLY with both Ryan Anderson and Jason Smith out what looks like for the season.

http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/231584/Pelicans-Interested-In-Trading-For-Big-Man

How can we oblige them. Bass/Hump/Green or some combination thereof.

Detroit (Monroe/Stuckey) and Chicago (Boozer and sweeteners)could jump in on this as could Houston (Asik for Tyreke)and I'm sure a few other teams.

Here are a couple of trade ideas that could work:

1. Hump (expiring) and Bass (hometown boy)for Gordon (with or without Rivers coming our way this would work).

2. Bass/Bogans(expiring) and a pick for Ryan Anderson (damaged goods right now) and Austin Rivers.

What, if anything, would they want from us, and what could we get in return? (They've been rumored to be shopping both Tyreke and Gordon.)

TP for your post. You beat me to it. Perhaps the mods can merge our two posts.

Great minds! TP for you too!

The other point to note is the NO's recent trade for Tyshawn Taylor and what that might mean for Rivers in the Pelican's eyes...

Excellent point about Rivers potential availability.

Perhaps he would fit under the category of the "Unappealing (hence undervalued)Trade Targets" thread?

For my money Rivers is unappealing without being undervalued.

No way he's a one-and-done or a lottery pick if he has a different last name.

Part of the assessment of a possible Rivers trade is whether you prefer the option of giving him a look over next year (and possibly 2015/2016, our choice) as a fifth, combo guard OR re-signing someone like Bayless for comparable, if not more, money, and more years.

While I agree that his draft status had something to do with his last name, part of the assessment is what upside (ceiling) do the teams see in Rivers.....

Bayless (career, over 6 years) : 19.3 mins/ game; 41% fgs; 34% 3-pt; 2.8 asst/game; 1.4 TO

Salary, this year: $3.1mill; FA going forward

A. Rivers: (career, over two years): 20.4 mins/ game; 37% fgs; 33% 3-pt; 1.9 assts/game; 1 TO/game

Salary, this year 2.3; 2014/15: 2.4 mill; 2015/16 (team option): 3.1 mill

This trade idea makes perfect sense for us, but I don't so for NO.  NO is 8 games out of the playoffs, and it only makes sense for a team to trade for Bass if they were a true playoff contender. They are such a young team they should be willing to be patient.  They are probably better off letting Smith expire then re-sign to a cheap deal, and being more patient with Rivers before writing him off.

Can we get a second-round pick instead of Rivers?

To respond to a couple of things:

NO's has very little in the way pf draft picks available:
http://basketball.realgm.com/nba/draft/future_drafts/detailed

Their first available 2nd rounder is in 2018.

As to whether NO would make this trade, or should...I tend to agree that I would sit tight if I were No and not make this move.

The proposal is in response to the reporting of Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports which claims that NO is looking for big man help. Given how little detail is provided (http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/231584/Pelicans-Interested-In-Trading-For-Big-Man) it could well be that this is not really reporting but rather speculation...in which case< i agree that NO would not make this move. However, if they are in fact looking for front court help, then....

I'm totally on board with using New Orleans as a landing spot for our potential logjam at the big forward position.

I am absolutely unenthusiastic about having Austin Rivers on the Celtics, especially when we already have Jerryd Bayless.

On the flip side, Gordon + Smith for Wallace and Bass checks out in the NBA trade machine. Or Bradley, Bass, and Wallace for Evans + Smith.

Not that I'm really rooting for Evans or Gordon to become Celtics, mind you. I'd just much rather have them than Austin Rivers.

If you're moving Wallace, you're probably giving up at least one first-round pick and it's not going to be the Clippers pick or the protected Philly pick.

unappealing suggestions to deal with NO.  don't want anyone off that roster not named Anthony Davis.  Already have enough PFs and SGs.  Neither Smith nor Rivers could crack the rotation we already have and that says a lot about them (even if Smith were healthy)
