That is the laziest column I have read in a while. He could have written most of it in September and just brushed it off for Rondo's return.

It's dated January 18, 2014

Yes, but everything he says about Rondo could have been written at any point in the off season.

He misses key factors that has happened since then: Stevens and Rondo seems to be very much on the same page, and Rondo has made zero indications that he is not in on this rebuild. Quite the opposite, actually.

And as several already have mentioned: The Celtics have made Rondo team captain. Unless that is a pretty cruel joke, that means that the franchise wants him to stay.

Yup, Rondo being named Captain is a fairly huge indicator that he's not going anywhere for the time being.  I don't think that even Danny Ainge would be so callous as to name him team captain and then be desperately trying to move him within a month.

The Captain is staying.

Actually, I think this is exactly the kind of move Danny would do just to get a little more leverage in a trade.  Not giving me what I want, I'll name Rondo captain to try and show I'm serious about keeping him, that might force other teams to up their offers a little.  (Not that I'm saying this is what I think is happening, but it wouldn't surprise me if that was what was happening).

But seriously though, I think some of you guys are making way too much out of Rondo being named captain.  This isn't like the Yankees who have only had 14 captains in 100+ years, and can go 5, 10, or even 37 years without naming a captain.  The C's have had at least one captain every year (except for a couple small gaps), a list that included such "untouchable" players as Dominque Wilkins, Dee Brown, Pervis Ellison, Antoine Walker, and Rick Fox.  Rondo is the best and most tenured player on the Celtics (and probably the most respected too), why wouldn't he be named captain? Really don't think it's any indication of him staying or going.

Rudy Gay was just named captain of the Raptors at the start of this season, didn't even make it 20 games before they traded him away.

Monta Ellis was named captain of the Warriors to start the 2011 season, at least they kept him half of a season before they shipped him out.

Being named captain and ability to be traded aren't really connected at all.

Just an FYI, the Suns have Okafor's 14.4 mil expiring contract and plenty of addition picks as well as their own:

Quote
2014 first round draft pick from Minnesota
Minnesota's 1st round pick to Phoenix protected for selections 1-13 in 2014, 1-12 in 2015 or 1-12 in 2016; if Minnesota has not conveyed a 1st round pick to Phoenix by 2016, then Minnesota will instead convey its 2016 2nd round pick and 2017 2nd round pick to Phoenix [Minnesota-New Orleans-Phoenix, 7/27/2012]

2014 first round draft pick from Washington
Washington's 1st round pick to Phoenix protected for selections 1-12 in 2014, 1-10 in 2015, 1-10 in 2016, 1-10 in 2017, 1-10 in 2018 or 1-10 in 2019 or unprotected in 2020 [Phoenix-Washington, 10/25/2013]

2014 first round draft pick from Indiana
Indiana's 1st round pick to Phoenix protected for selections 1-14 in 2014, 1-14 in 2015, 1-14 in 2016, 1-14 in 2017, 1-14 in 2018 or 1-14 in 2019 or unprotected in 2020 [Indiana-Phoenix, 7/28/2013]

2015 first round draft pick from L.A. Lakers
L.A. Lakers' 1st round pick to Phoenix protected for selections 1-5 in 2015, 1-3 in 2016 or 1-3 in 2017 or unprotected in 2018 [L.A. Lakers-Phoenix, 7/11/2012]

If the season ended today:

-Minny is #12, so they'd hang onto their pick (Top 13 protected)

-Washington is #18... pick goes to Suns (Top 12 protected)

-Pacers #30 ... Pick goes to Suns (Top 14 protected)

-Suns #21 ... But they are 2 games out of the lotto where they'd pick #14

I'd do Rondo+Bass for Okafor, Bledsoe, Washington's 1st, Sun's unprotected 2014 1st, Lakers 2015 1st.

Suns probably laugh that off.  But i'd offer it nonetheless.

The Celts. When Rondo was Bledsoe's age he was going to his 2nd all-star game, 1st team all-defense, not that far from making the all-nba team and had already led a team to the nba finals (and almost averaged a triple-double in the playoffs the year before). What's Bledsoe done that's at all comparable?

If Rondo were playing behind Paul, he would've done the same thing as Bledsoe. Let's not overlook that.

Suns probably say no. They value Bledsoe tremendously and he can play off the ball effectively and used in a tandem with Dragic. Plus, they don't take on Bass' contract (which stunts the development of the Morris twins) and keep a 1st rd pick.

Cool... when KG was Bledsoe's age, he was going to his 4th all-star game and was All-NBA 1st team... but I still would rather have Bledsoe on my team right now than Kevin Garnett...

 ::)

What you said was mildly irrelevant, Tim.  What Pierce, KG and Rondo did back when they were in their prime have no bearing on what they are doing as veterans.

Rondo + Bass for Okafor's expiring, Bledsoe and picks makes some sense for both teams.  More than likely not happening, but it makes sense for two teams heading in different directions.

Bledsoe's defense is All-Defense worthy and if he were in the East, he'd be an All-Star.

But this is the Celtics we are talking about. The mantle of Captain deems respect by management and the players as well.

The captain thing isn't to be taken lightly. I mean there was no real need to do it. Several teams have no captain.  In DA's tenure here as a GM, only Pierce has been one. So yeah ts not like baseball but the Celtics aren't an organization like the Raps or something. A lot I guess here are going to be pretty upset when Rondo is not moved by deadline. And the journos of course that try to throw stuff out there to see if it sticks so they can claim to have broken something they made up themselves.

DA ....will be patient ....if h does pull the trigger.......hoping a playoff hungry team give him a early pick .

The issue I see with keeping Rondo.......he'll be 30 at least before the table is set for another run........only issue I see ......if it is ok with Rondo ...I guess it's  ok..........

Time is a factor

According to synergy sports Bledsoe's 185th in the league in opponent's ppp. Those numbers, his opponent's production number at 82games and his defensive numbers at basketballreference are *all* well below anything I've seen from Rondo at any point in his career. It looks like he's had a grand total of 1 second place vote in his career. Wake me up when the coaches agree with your assessment and put him on the all-defense team.

I don't think anyone is debating that Bledsoe is better than Rondo right now.  That's completely foolish.  Clearly the premise is that the Suns would be willing to give up Bledsoe, cap relief AND picks to get Rondo... so you're basically arguing against yourself.

The idea is that Boston is 3-5 years away from competing... so giving up a better player now for a guy who fits more in line with our rebuild makes sense.

But for the record,  Rondo is averaging 7 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 turnovers 1.5 steals on 36% shooting, 0% from three and 0% from the line. We've lost every game of the Captain Rondo era. Bledsoe has been vastly superior this year.  ;)

I know Rondo is just getting back to things. But its incredible how with Pressey we win vs a 500 team (Raptors) and we lose 2 against really bad teams
