I really like Love, but like Sullinger in our situation most of all.
First off we don't have to give up anything to get him. He's already on the team, can probably get a pretty friendly extension soon, and then can develop as we go. And we can instead use our money and resources for other pieces. Even if Sully doesn't develop into the consistent scorer Love is, as long as he is healthy, we have a good solid defender, a very good rebounder, and a guy who can get hot and score from the FT line to the paint. But if he has Love type talent on a consistent basis and is an All-Star pretty soon, I'm not going to be surprised either. He has a Pierce like knack for the game.
Second, while Sullinger has started showing flashes of Love like talent on offense, a big asset to his game is his tough mentality and defensive mindset. I think he is already a pretty good defender and should only improve, given the effort and toughness he has. On D he reminds me of David West. Love on the other hand... he is not a defender and has shown himself to be very much a finesse player, despite that he mixes it up in box outs. He also has a very different demeanor, which shows him complaining about calls and avoiding contact. It is what it is, Love is very skilled, but how Sully plays by contrast I personally like a lot more. One of your better players being a poor defender and one that doesn't have the mindset to improve is not a good thing.
I would much rather keep him in place and add around Sullinger. As much as I like Love, our resources could be used elsewhere. If we can get one of the very top picks this year, we should be looking at keeping Sully in place and adding on top of that base with our resources.
Say we get Embiid. Then we have a Sully/Embiid front court and we can look to add scoring off the wing through a trade or a Free Agent. I would like that make up more.
Or we could end up with Parker or Wiggins or whoever. But we could have a much more complete team than one where we have to give up a ton of assets for Love.
