you are 100% correct he's being showcased.
Sully's getting rest and I think they're taking it easy on Olynyk's body and letting him repair a bit, but Humphries is getting some burn to show teams that he is still a good rebounder and solid rotational big man.
I don't think he'd necessarily be taken by teams needing a veteran PF for the playoffs off the bench, rather I think he'd be traded for another contract of the same portion +1 year and we'd have a pick+young asset coming back. Other option is as you said, moving long term salary for a decent big. Good example off the top of my head would be Asik+Montejunas for Humphries and Crawford.(If Bass has found a new home).
Potential scenario with Chicago-who I'm not sure are tanking and would rather show their toughness in the playoffs to future free agents...
Boston sends:
Humphries
Bogans
Chicago sends:
Boozer
Charlotte 2014 first round pick (1-10 protected)+Tony Snell.
This gives them the caproom to go after Carmelo or Bosh next year and they get two veterans with Humphries backing up Gibson off the bench. They didn't want to spend 15 million on Deng but they'll want another superstar to both old the fort while Rose is out rehabbing again, and then when Rose returns. Bosh would be perfect. Carmelo wouldn't be the best but they'll be free agent players with that base +Rose coming back.
There is no way the Bulls give up either a #1 or Snell let alone both. The Bulls will amnesty Boozer next year and have the cap room to go after a star, unfortunately for them (just like with us) I don't think one will go there...
You're right they probably wouldn't give up both.
Only reason I think they'd have the conversation is that they
*Move Boozer for expirings and save 16 million dollars.
*They cut $2 million from this years pay roll.
*They'd still have a first round pick of Charlotte's too which projects to be around the 14-16 mark.
*They save/keep a further 16 million next year when Humphries will give them similar bench production to Gibson and Crawford will help them score in this years playoffs.
I guess it all depends on if they want to go hard at the playoffs...I mean they've won 4 in a row since Deng left.
The more that I think about it, I doubt if Ainge would bite on this, and I think he'd actually ask for more in return.
I think he'd seriously ask for a pick, Snell AND Mirotic's rights because it kills any free agency plans we may have had.
Good thing is he could still take on Boozer and move both Boozer and Wallace with some of our picks and young assets if we did want to make a trade splash.
