If we fall out of the top 7, I think Danny trades the pick.

I agree on that.

I think Embiid should go #1 virtually no matter who lands the pick.  Players that can do what he likely/potentially will do are so hard to come by

That's hard to turn down.

I still say the Mormon connection keeps Parker as Ainge's number one pick- and the fact that he's the best player.
I've been saying it for the last year when everyone else was creaming over Wiggins that Parker is my number one pick.

I don't think the Mormon connection has anything to do with it.  He can ball, flat out.  That's why Ainge takes him. The only role the Mormon thing would play is in his character.  Most of those kids are good people, stay out of trouble, etc.  Ainge knows he won't have a problem with him off the court.

Is a nice tool.

TP for that! Cool tool.

Half the time we took WCS, the other half we had no pick and the Sixers had two (do they have two anyway?) - that was weird...

Sorry, I should have worded that better.
Ainge has coveted jabari since he was 15 and his personal love for Jabari might slightly influence his pick decision.
Ainge is one of the best at separating emotion from management decisions but if they were close, which I think they will be, I think it potentially plays a part. Just my opinion.

Read that last line again. One more time.

If you can pick Embiid, you should do it. I think Parker is better right now, but the NBA is a totally different animal. Embiid and Wiggins will look better in the pros than in the NCAA, and if they get to play with a decent PG, wow.

Wiggins and Parker might still end up as better players than Embiid (even Exum or another guy), but if you can get a generational talent at center you don't let him slip. Forget about positional need or personal bias, if you have a big man who can affect the game on both ends, you just need a PG (and we have one of the best), and scoring from the wings. Miami has that (PG - LeBroid, wing- Karate Hamster and the 3-point band, Big - Bosh), and they do pretty well. Imagine a real dominant big like Embiid with a crafty playmaker like Rondo. Add some good (not great) players and you have a contender.

We're not getting a top-5 pick, though. But if we can draft two out of Saric/James Young/Cauley-Stein, I'll be very pleased.

1. Boston - Embiid
2. Atlanta - Wiggins
3. Boston (Brooklyn) - Parker

It could happen.

would be funny if we landed the #1 pick, Took Parker... and he went on a Mormon Mission for 2 years.
Why do I not find this funny?

 :(

LB would be stocked.

Boston could just tank for two more years! ;)

Tp. Well played.
I wouldn't be happy.  It would be a disaster.    I just read an article the other day that some GMs are saying they'd still probably consider Parker #1 if he decided to go on his mission... but that would be a major bummer.

It would be funny in a dark humor type of way... Finally win a lotto and the guy bails for two years.

15. Boston - some bum
16. Atlanta (Brooklyn) - some bum
20. Boston (Atlanta) - some bum

It could happen

Right now our pick is projected #8.   Brooklyn's pick is projected #15.  Atlanta's pick is projected #20.

But with Rondo returning and us only 1.5 games out of the playoffs, it will not be hard for us to jump to #15... Brooklyn can easily rise higher.

I don't think there's any way a team takes Parker #1 overall without securing some kind of written commitment to forgo his mission until after his NBA career.

There's no statute of limitations on when a mission has to happen, as far as I know.

Is there a chance of Wiggins or Parker not declare for this year's draft if the #1 is not guaranteed?

Chad Ford (1:42 PM)

Yes, I know both players are considering a return to school. Ditto for Embiid. I think it's unlikely for Wiggins and Embiid. Might be a little bit more likely for Parker. And I'm told a Mormon mission still isn't out of the question for him. I asked several GMs about what would happen to his draft stock if he declared for the draft and then said he was going on a two year mission. I was surprised how many of them said they'd still consider him with the No. 1 pick.

First #1 overall stash pick?

I have a really, really hard time imagining that any of those three guys come back for a sophomore season barring the most extreme circumstances, though.

We all know there is no way Parker puts his childhood dream of playing in the NBA on hold for the mission. If he wanted the mission that bad, he would have skipped Duke this year. Parker is NBA bound 100%.

How do we all know that?  One reason he probably chose Duke was because it was a program with a demonstrated friendliness towards Mormons who take time off from college to go on a mission.

A mission only delays his NBA career, it is unlikely to completely scuttle it.

Also, the LDS Church lowered the minimum age for missionaries from 19 to 18 only a short time before he was supposed to announce which school he had picked.

Probably a valid point...very true.

I also think he knows the Mormon isn't going to hit up the playboy mansion & down some suds with Rodman when he's not playing basketball.

So the off the court issues probably way into the decision.  The background check will be easy for Ainge. That has to ease the concerns when investing your high pick and cash on someone who will have a high character both on and off the court.
