The Cavs and Jazz are discussing a deal involving Utah’s Richard Jefferson, according to Marc Stein (Twitter links) and Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com.

R. Jefferson for Bynum works on ESPN Trade Machine.

Makes sense. I am sure Utah will be looking to free up some more cash and lose more games while Cleveland looks like they are still in it to win it.

Update from HoopsRumors

The Cavs and Jazz are discussing a deal involving Andrew Bynum and Richard Jefferson, according to Marc Stein (Twitter links) and Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com.  The Cavs remain in talks with the Lakers about Pau Gasol, but the Utah deal is now also a possibility for them.

Jefferson would fill the Cavs’ need for a small forward and his $11MM deal expires at the end of the year.

Exactly the type of move they should be making. A short-term small forward rental would be perfect for the Cavs.

Hold the presses!   They are 11W and 22L.  I don't think they are trying to win it.

Also, I'm not sure any team actively trying to snag Richard Jefferson can really be described as "in it to win it.:
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

Good news for the Cs is that the cave seem to be looking for trades to improve and not tank. This helps the Cs and the draft pick front.

The latest from our sister blog, SB Nation's "Fear the Sword", the Cavs have a backup deal with the Jazz if the Gasol talks fall through.

As described above, the deal would be Jefferson to the Cavs for Bynum AND a second round pick.

http://www.fearthesword.com/2014/1/5/5277386/nba-trade-rumors-cavaliers-jazz-andrew-bynum-richard-jefferson

Two things strike me as odd about that.

One is that if the Cavs are gonna give the Jazz a second rounder for RJeff, why is there a problem giving the Fakers at least a couple of their seconds or maybe more for a far more valuable player in Gasol. Both Jefferson and Gasol would be rentals, potentially, anyway.

The second is that this report kinda undermines previous reports as to who was going to get compensation from whom in a potential Cavs/Fakers deal.

If Utah would get Jefferson and a second, what could Green fetch with Bynum, a first, Waiters, if we threw in Crawford?
