Why would we trade for that kind of salary and a train wreck of a player

NY - Gasol
BOS - Chandler, Shumpert
LA - Humphries, Bradley

Not enough incoming $$$ for it to work for the Lakers.

Are you referring to salary rules for trades?  The numbers on that one work fine.  I'm personally not a fan of it, since I don't see Chandler staying healthy enough to be worth it, and I don't see Ainge thinking it's worth going into the luxury tax this year, but each of the teams is taking on an allowable amount given what they are trading away.

Lakers have $19 million going out and $14 million coming in. It doesn't work.

You are always allowed to take back less salary than you send out.

Not if all teams involved are over the cap. NY can't  take in $19 mill and only send out $14 million. The trade doesn't work.

I haven't seen him play much lately and not sure how much he has in the tank but IF we did trade for him I would love to retain him at a reasonable price.

I think it coupd help with the rebuild, give us a mix of young mid and older vet presence. I'd think playing with Rondo would help him tremendously as well.

Not sure how much he would command or how many years but woth a several young bigs on the team already, a veteran presence could be beneficial, especially if he has some left for a couple years

Trade adds only 1.3 million to Boston, I thought they were further under the luxury range than that.  That said, I'm sure we could send someone else out in the trade (maybe Bogans to LA) or just do a separate trade later sending out more than we take in.

You have the rule wrong.  You can always take back less salary, you just are limited to how much you can take in if you are over the cap.  NY takes in Gasol but gives up Chandler and Shumpert who are about 15.3 and just enough to allow NY to make the trade.

So take my Gasol 3-way trade

NY - Gasol
BOS - Chandler, Shumpert
LA - Humphries, Bradley

And then add this 3-way trade

CHI - Green, Gee
BOS - Bennett, Waiters
CLE - Deng, Crawford

Leaves Boston looking like this

PG - Rondo, Pressey
SG - Waiters, Lee, Brooks
SF - Shumpert, Wallace, Bennett
PF - Sullinger, Bass
C - Chandler, Olynyk, Faverani

Boston gets better and gets young talented assets all at the same time, while the other trades all work for the other teams involved.

I'd welcome him to the team for a different contract.  I like his all around game.

No this isn't a bumped thread from 2011.

Why trade for Pau Gasol?... because it runs completely counter to everything I expected this team to do this year.  I thought we'd trade all the vets (including Rondo), bottom out and try to land a Top 8 pick.  At this point, we clearly aren't bottoming out.  The Leastern Conference is garbage.  Our team is mediocre by default.  The draft dreams are down the toilet.  Right now our picks are #19 and #20.   We look like we could make a run at the 3rd or 4th seed in the Leastern Conference.  We don't currently have enough to be competitive with the Pacers and Heat, but I mean... who knows what could happen.  Maybe if you rented Gasol, you could make some noise.

I don't think Danny's going to do anything to disrupt whatever plans he has for the team in order to make incremental improvements to this year's team. He did something similar with Antoine once so it's possible, but I don't think he'd trade anything that he really values for a rental.

If you're going to burn two picks in a trade, I'd rather send them to Houston for Asik.
I hear you... but do you really believe Asik would have more of an impact on this team than Pau Gasol this year?  Serious question... do you?  I'm not high on Asik.   Is 27 year old Asik a more impactful player than 33 year old Pau Gasol?

Worse Trade EVER.

No, no, no, no.  Gasol has fallen off the cliff at age 33.  You don't give up picks and assets just to land an expiring contract.

Does landing Gasol put this team 'over the top' in any way shape or form?  Only in a magical dreamland that you have apparently seen before posting that trade proposal.

But the Lakers having $19m going out and $14m coming in would not be a reason why it doesn't work.

Why would we trade for that kind of salary and a train wreck of a player

Because...

a.) That "train wreck of a player" is averaging 14 and 9. I'm going to very optimistic once he gets utilized properly. And knowing our coaching staff, who resurrected Jordan Crawford's career, he's going to get used properly.

b.) If for some reason he doesnt work out, he's $19 million off the books.

c.) The potential of a Pau, Asik, Sullinger lineup if there. Kind of exciting is you ask me.

I'd give one of our 1st rounders for Gasol. Give them the pick along Humphries and a bunch of players not named Rajon Rondo, Jared Sullinger and Jeff Green. Like the OP said, we can unload contracts to nab him as well.
