Got to admit - this is possibly a bit far fetched. But it comes on partially sound reasoning if you assume we can afford to get rid of picks.

Celtics acquire: Greg Monroe, Charlie Villanueva, Arron Afflalo, Jameer Nelson

Pistons acquire: Gerald Wallace, Jamal Crawford, 2014 Hawks pick, 2015 Clippers pick

Magic acquires: Kris Humphries, Marshon Brooks, Celtics 2015 pick, Nets 2016 pick

Magic would love to get 2 picks for Afflalo and getting out of Nelson's extra year is a big pus for them. They clear time for Oladipo, save $$, get picks, and have a worse team to get a better pick at the top of this draft.

Pistons get rid of their horrible frontcourt dilemma (ie Smith at the 3) and get Crawford to provide shooting. If they wanted a better 3, it'd be worth seeing if Orlando would swap Harkless to the Pistons for the Hawks 2014 pick.

Celtics look like:

Rondo/Nelson
Afflalo/Bradley
Green/Lee
Sully/Olynyk
Monroe/Faverani

Not much of a bench but a lot of shooting if Bradley and Lee keep hitting shots. Monroe is great albeit he'll need to be paid in the summer. Afflalo has been a top 5 SG this year and imo that's a contender in 2015/16.

Looks sick. Gives us a nasty starting five and good depth. Don't like loosing all our draft picks though, that's tough.

I don't think the Pistons are getting value in that trade. Monroe is worth more than end of the 1st draft picks. Plus they get stuck with Wallace's contract? I don't see it.

It would be painful to get stuck with both Nelson and Villanueva on the team, even if Charlie V is expiring..

This trade is also impossible since we would be taking on a few million more in salary. We committed to not paying the tax this year. Being a repeat tax payer would have destroyed our future.

I'm a big fan of Afflalo's game, but I'm not comfortable giving up 2 first rounders for him and Nelson and also taking on his salary.  There's also the issue, as you pointed out, of paying Monroe this summer.

TP for the idea though.

i like that team. would be a competitive fun team but i think it is a move away from contending. i'm a firm believer in championship teams needing a wing (2 or 3) player that is a consistent go to scorer. i don't see green or afflalo being that guy. as much as i like green i think afflalo brings more to his position and would make a run with green as a centerpiece in a trade maybe melo or something idk good idea though ! i don't think the pistons do that trade. they are giving up a very good young big man for a scrub a sixth man and some late draft picks. they want to compete now and would probably demand more for monroe

I LOVE it for the Celts.

Orlando also probably says yes.

Detroit probably says no though.

I would think if they gave up Monroe they would want one of the following 3: Rondo, Green, Sully.

I think adding Afflalo and Monroe to this team without giving up Rondo or Sullinger would make the team considerably more competitive (meaning somewhere between the Hawks and Grizzlies of the past few years).

I especially like the idea of adding Monroe at the center position next to Sullinger.  That's a great combination of inside scoring, size, skill, and passing ability in the post and at the top of the key.

I think the problem with a Rondo - Afflalo - Sullinger - Monroe combo is that it would cost a lot of money once Monroe gets his max extension this summer and then Afflalo and Sullinger are up for extensions.  Not to mention Rondo, who will probably want 14-15 million a year on his next contract.

So you could end up with four starters who are each making 12-15 million a year.  That's not sustainable with the new luxury tax rules, so you'd only be able roll with that group for a handful of seasons, unless you're  okay having no depth at all behind those players.

My preference would be to trade for Monroe and then try to fill in the wing spots via the draft and smart free agency signings.  Try to find productive guys on the cheap.  With the three man core of Rondo/Sullinger/Monroe, you'd just need some effective off-ball scorers who can spread the floor and defend.  If you get lucky and one of those guys turns into an All-Star caliber player, you could have a dark horse contender.

I thought Jamal Crawford was on the Clippers?

And where's Bass?

Pistons prolly want more for Monroe....

I maintain that a solid package that the Celtics could offer for Monroe (with Villanueva and Singler added) is Green, Bradley, Bass, and the Clippers 2015 1st.

I think they'd go for that as well.  Will Monroe want max?  and do you pay it?

Yes he will, and yes I do.

He's a skilled big man who's been productive his entire time in the league without any major injury concerns and he's only 24 years old.

I'm always okay with paying top dollar for a young big man who is already worth that kind of money (rather than just paying for what you hope the future production will be).

1. Afflalo and BBD for Clippers pick, Crawford, Humphries.

2. Monroe/Jerebko for Bass/Olynyk/draft picks

If Monroe is gonna cost future unprotected draft picks, I dont think Green should be included.  What picks would it cost?

Rondo  Pressey
Afflalo  Bradley
Green  (2014 pick)
Sullinger
Monroe  Faverani

As far as paying those guys going forward, thats what all the extra future picks are for.  Build the bench through the draft.  You may not be able to keep Green and/or Afflalo in 3 years but hopefully Danny drafts well and keeps the team stockpiled with young talent.

Again, the key would be how many draft picks does Monroe cost?

I don't see the point in two picks for Afflalo.  Seems like a waste of two draft picks, which might be pretty solid picks.  I also can't see Detroit taking on Wallace and giving up Monroe for a couple of late firsts and nothing else of value.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Agreed.

Detroit is in win-now mode with all the money they've invested in Jennings and Smith.  Thinking long term, they want to build a successful environment so they can keep Drummond if he continues his track towards superstardom.

I think Detroit will only trade Monroe if they get back players who will fit better with their other guys and help them be a competitive playoff team in the present and near future.  So I think they'd need to be getting Green in the deal from the Celtics, at a minimum.  Getting picks may not be as much of a concern for them.
