Danny Ainge is just being his usual honest self.

I am not sure if this is sarcastic or not, but in general Danny is very honest.  He just is also very diplomatic.  He keeps a lot of information close to the vest, and is very careful about the way he says things.  If you listen to him carefully, and not in short soundbites, he really is shockingly honest.
Yeah he really only lies about trade talks, even then he usually just uses weasel words to get around the question.

He's pretty honsest after the deadline and about the team in general.

That's right. He says what he has to say regarding trade related topics. Otherwise, his candor is refreshing.

here's the quote from Rotoworld - "I don't think he's close," Ainge said. "I don't think it's gonna happen in the next few weeks. We're not on pins and needles about it. We're being very cautious with Rondo. He's still got a little bit of a limp. He needs to get his strength back."

Oh My Gosh, Cs are atop the Atlantic?
I guess that's what happens when I don't follow the NBA for a week (smh at myself).
We need to start playing Marshon Brooks more. And Humphries too!
Celtics fan for life.

I'm shocked as well. Although, look at the teams in our division. Philly is the only "real" competition. At least until the New York teams get their chemistry right and aren't plagued with injuries.

Fine with me.

No need to rush him back.  I always thought Jan/Feb was the realistic timetable for his return anyways.

Me too, but (on the back of AP and Ainge saying that he expected Rondo to be ready for training camp) I expect there are a lot of very upset CelticsBloggers.

Question; if Rondo misses the whole year, is he still more of a "competitor with the fire to win/warrior/soldier/other weirdly masculine metaphor that's probably inappropriate for a children's game" than Derrick Rose?

I think he is, Rose is a much more aggresive and explosive player. The way he plays is too much for legs that just had surgery.

Rondo on the other hand, can still be incredibly effective as a play caller and his ability to move the ball. I think even if he takes it very slow, he will still be a huge benefit as long as he took his time off working on parts of his game that really need work *cough*free throws*cough*

I'm sort of just throwing that out there about Ainge to see how other people's perceptions of him color their interpretations of his words.

Consider two cases.  Ainge really wants to trade Rondo or Ainge won't trade Rondo unless it is as part of a package for a better player.  Do Ainge's words have different meaning, depending on the case?

Yeah, I can't think of any time he has ever actually lied about trades (that we know of anyways), but he is very careful with his words.  And he takes liberties to make his own working definitions of words like "available" and "offer", and things like that.

He's said "nothing was close, or out there" when we know a trade call was about to go down and it got killed. Or when a trade then happened immediately afterwards.

That's lying even if he doesn't directly lie and say "such and such trade wasn't discussed".

Rondo is definitely going to play this year as Ainge will want to get his value up for a potential trade this summer.  You can't trade him for anything more than peanuts if he doesn't suit up at all.  I suspect he will come back towards the end of January.  That way he will be on the court at the trade deadline (though I don't think he gets moved this year) and if by some chance he looks like his old self right out of the gate Boston will still have time to acquire pieces around him for a playoff push (if they go that route).  If he takes awhile to get back into shape that will give him a couple of months to get his sea legs under him in an otherwise lost season.

I doubt Danny's looking to do anything short term. If they make the playoffs, they make the playoffs. That isn't likely to affect any moves that he'll make, which would be geared towards the future or towards better financial flexibility.

His quotes don't mean much. He's saying "Rondo isn't close", but that's at least partially in response to reports that imply his return is fairly imminent.
