The thread "tanking isnt working" got me thinking what realistic trades could be made at the deadline to create the best possible playoff team for this years Cs.

I am not saying this is necessarily what DA should do but the trades may be acceptable and the team would be interesting.

Trade..

Houston gets Bass, Faverani, and Nets 2014 1st

Magic get Crawford, Bogans, and future protected 1st

Cs get Asik and Afflalo (averaging 22pts game)

Post deadline celtics

PG  Rondo
SG  Afflalo
SF  Green
PF  Sully
C   Asik
6th AB
7th Wallace
8th KO
9th Lee
10th Hump

This will leave the Cs with Rondo 27, Green 27, Asik 27, and Afflalo 28 as the core vets. With AB 23, Sully 21, and KO 22 as the young core. Humphries expiring deal will allow the Cs to handle the cap hit of asik's contract jumping to 15mill next season while allowing them to resign AB and stay out of luxury tax.

If Sully progresses like he is showing he and Asik could be a Gasol/Randolph like combo. Not as good but not that far off. Rondo, AB and Afflalo will compliment each other nicely in a 3 guard rotation.

I think both deals are fair for Orlando Houston.

The rockets reportetly want 2 1sts for asik. This isn't likely but I think this offer is more then fair and bass and vitor both should fit nicely with howard.

The magic are still rebuilding and this trade helps them lose this year while clearing cap space and adding a 1st. If they see him as a future piece crawford could work nicely next to Oladipo.

The question is how many games does this team win in 2014-2015?

Aside from Indiana and Miami who in the east is better?

C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin

I'm not sure Orlando hangs up the phone that quickly--I have no doubt that they'd more Afflalo if the price was right, but I don't think Crawford, Bogans, and a pick is going to do it.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

I agree its lite on incentive for Orlando. With a core of under 23 talent and Afflalo have 3 years left as apposed to Davis and Nelsons 2yrs my hope is maybe the need to be in the top 6 of this draft wins out. Aside from Wiggins or Parker. Randle, Smart or Exum could all change that franchise.

If DA is confident in the chemistry of these players and the development of Sully maybe send this years first top 5 protected in place of future pick.

The trade makes us pretty good. But is this core really good enough to knock off one, or both of Indiana and Miami, then whoever comes out of the West?

Afflalo is playing like a star, no way they're gonna give him up for that.

No thanks.

I'd rather keep out picks and sign a max contract star when hump, Crawford, Brooks and Bogan's contracts expire.

Not under any circumstances willing to take a scrub like Asik on that hideous contract.  Next please.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
It's not a bad idea to improve the current squad, but that lineup probably isn't good enough to ever get past the 2nd round of the playoffs. Maybe in a year like this year, but it's just too weak to compete with the top 4 teams.

Afflalo is mediocre, same with Asik.
You'd have Afflalo, Asik and Green who are all okay players on pretty big money vs the cap yet none of them are close to an All Star caliber guy.

Danny Ainge goes for big hits, he doesn't settle for middle of the road.
This to me, makes us like the old Atlanta Hawks- maybe slightly worse.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Right now Afflalo looks like the best available shooting guard out there (if he is available) and on a pretty good contract too. He is the best shooting guard in the east, if you count George as a sf. He should be an all star this year.

I believe that Orlando can get something better for him, if they don't keep him, but they might see themselves in the same situation that Seattle/OKC was in when they traded Ray to us.

So I'm all for getting Afflalo, but I'm not sure that Asik is the answer at center. I would go for Tyson Chandler, Marc Gasol or Joakim Noah.

I like Afflalo more than Asik, but I wouldn't give a first rounder for either guy. Not worth it.

We are stockpiling assets to trade them for difference-makers.

The current expiring deals will not give us max deal room. If AB is NOT resigned the Cs will have 8.5 mill in free cap space next offseason.

Playing devils advocate to my own idea the negative is the possibility of mediocrity while loosing two picks.

The positive is these trades place a bunch of similar age players around Rondo for the remainder of his contract. In 2 years Rondo and Asik will be FA, in 3 years Green, Wallace, Afflalo, and Lee. Even after trading two picks the Cs still have alot of picks in the coming years.

Matchup vs pacers

Pacers    Celtics
Hibbert    >     Asik
West       =     Sully  (I know its a stretch)
George     >     Green
Stephenson <     Afflalo
Hill       <      Rondo

and the Cs would have a deeper bench

plan for free agency the year after this, not this coming year.
Asik is not worth that kind of money -- I don't see him as the caliber of center needed to win a title.  We don't have a KG next to him like we did with Perk.  I like Sully a lot but he's not prime KG.

Afflalo is ok.  nothing great.  not the go-to scorer we need at SG.  We'd have better options at SG in the next 2 drafts so I see no reason to give up picks for this guy.

Askik is not that good, if he was he wouldn't have been a bench player for his career.  Can we move on from Asik please, we don't need another goofy white boy on this team, Olynyk is goofy enough.

Him being a bench player is tough to pin on him too much.  He has been a bench player because he has been playing behind two of the top 5 centers in the league his entire career.  Now, he is certainly not a star, but he is probably a top 10-15 center in the league.

The guy I think is a little overrated here is Afflalo.  I don't think he makes the team that much better.

Not enough value in return or Afflalo. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if Orlando and Boston discussed a Rondo-Afflalo swap.
