Derrick's career averages:
21 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds, 1 steal on 46%/31%/81% shooting
Those are Tim Hardaway type numbers. Tim Hardaway was never an MVP.
Are his career averages even relevant? Is the MVP a career-oriented award? Unless you're Karl Malone, the answer is a resounding, "No."
And on top of that, these are 'career averages' with 55% of the games played before he turned 22. To have the season he had at 23, with the success he had as a leader, and as an individual at 23, that's flat-out amazing. Also not relevant to the MVP discussion, but amazing.
27 pts, 7.7 assists, and the best player on the best (regular season) team in basketball. That's overrated as a MVP? Tim Hardaway numbers? Come on.
