Per sources, Derrick Rose tore his right meniscus and will need surgery.

not nearly as bad as an acl/mcl

Basically Rose pulled a Westbrook, right?

what's the recovery time on a torn meniscus?
Depends very much on the degree of the tear, and what sort of surgery they do. They could remove it or try to stitch it depending on the damage.

If they can repair meniscus, as doctors were able to do w/ @russwest44, Rose could return this season. If they have to shave, it's worse.

David Aldridge

Removing the meniscus actually allows for a faster recovery; it just has worse long-term effects.  It's a trade off: you return sooner, but potentially jeopardize your career's longevity.

And yeah, he has the same injury as Westbrook, except Westbrook suffered it in his lateral meniscus (which is actually worse).  Knowing how cautious he was with his recovery last year, though, he's missing at least several months.

Wade had his removed during his Marquette days and he said he regrets it now because of what it's doing to his knee.

http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/11/23/projected-recovery-time-for-derrick-rose-after-meniscus-surgery/

According to multiple reports, Derrick Rose has torn the meniscus in his non-surgically repaired knee. He will require surgery and is currently listed as being out indefinitely.

Out indefinitely, of course, can mean a lot of different things. Marc Gasol was listed with that designation last year after an abdominal tear, and he came back after just two games.

So how much time will Rose actually miss? Obviously, the Bulls would be wise to play it plenty safe after surviving this scare, and truth be told, there shouldn’t be a crunch to rush Rose back to action. The Bulls are good enough to be a playoff team fairly easily, with or without their star point guard.

The severity of the meniscus tear matters a great deal when considering recovery times, and it isn’t uncommon for surgeons to make the decision on how much of the meniscus to repair or remove until once they are actually in the knee and can see the damage.

Point being, we’ll know more once Rose’s surgery is actually performed.

What we can do in the meantime, though, is look at the recovery time for other athletes who have suffered meniscus injuries. Again, I can’t stress enough that every player is different, and every recovery process varies. Metta World Peace recovered from meniscus surgery in just 12 days. Other players have taken two months. These are just to provide context.

In the past, most teams have listed players out with a meniscus injury as being sidelined for “at least six weeks.” That was the time frame for Jeremy Lin back in 2012 and World Peace in 2013.

In 2011, Leon Powe suffered a torn meniscus and was slated to miss six weeks. He returned to play in seven weeks.

Tyrus Thomas suffered the same injury that year and was listed as being out for up to eight weeks. He returned early and was back on the floor in seven weeks.

While the Bulls will almost certainly stick with the “out indefinitely” designation, particularly given Rose’s unique situation of recovering from an ACL tear, Rose’s recovery can probably be estimated at somewhere between 6-10 weeks. That’s based solely on what we’ve seen from other players who have suffered a similar injury, and again, we’ll know more once the actual surgery takes place.

So sad.

He put in all that work on his left knee, he forgot about his right.

Man, just sad.

Hope Rose can right his career, injuries like that suck.

I think this opens the chance for the Cs to get Boozer for a Humphries/Lee combo. Bulls have to include their Charlotte 2014 pick. Maybe Humphries/Bogans so the Bulls cut more salaries instead of using amnesty provision on Boozer.

As for the proposed Rondo/Wallace to the Bulls trade, I wouldn't do it because Rondo is a top 10 player, and although there's a lot of value on that return, you are getting to start again with a rookie PG, and that's a big risk.

Mirotic will be a quality starter, maybe an All Star, but you never know. He's improved every year, and he should stay for another season with Real Madrid. This season his team defense and rebounding is getting to the point you should expect from him, but he could use some more time in Europe, even if he's already the best player not in the NBA. I hope Rudy Fernández and Sergio Rodríguez advice him not to go too soon to the NBA, like they did. Right now, their team is playing the most exciting ball I've seen in Europe in 25-30 years, and beating their opponents by almost 30 a game average, so I hope he can stay here until 2015 summer.

Mirotic has nothing to do with Gallinari, his game is somehow similar to Luis Scola, but better at everything, has an automatic FIBA corner three pointer, can defend the post, rebound, put in on the floor... he's a legit power forward. I really doubt Chicago trades his rights, they're waiting for Boozer to get off their books so they can offer Mirotic a good contract.

WOW, what an awful trade for the Bulls. Why would they trade Boozer AND teh Bobcats 1st rounder for that useless package? We would need to give a few 1st rounders in that deal just to get Boozer for Humphries and Lee without the Bobcats pick being in the deal.

Nah, the Boozer for Humphries+Lee gives the Bulls many advantages:

- they don't have to amnesty Boozer so they save a ton of money (doesn't matter it's off the cap).

- they get Gibson to start, and Humphries to play at his best role, first big off the bench.

- they can let Humphries expire, then bring Mirotic and extend Deng.

- Courtney Lee is a capable guard to improve their depth.

The Bulls can hold the fort until Rose is back (hopefully), and still compete for the title, setting themselves better for the future.

The Cs would get the best player in the trade, but also a terrible contract, so they must be paid with a pick that might be a mid-lottery or even a non-lottery pick if the Bobcats make the playoffs (anything can happen this year in the lEastern Conference).

Maybe the Bulls don't like it, or maybe it's Danny who doesn't want the trade, but IMO it would be interesting to explore.

Derrick Rose is reportedly "leaning" toward having his torn medial meniscus reattached, a procedure which could sideline him for the rest of the season.

Probably a better idea for him in the long term.

Definitely a bummer, though.

Oof!  I'll be pulling for the kid, but I don't see a strong likelihood of missing two consecutive full seasons with knee injuries and then being able to come back and be the superstar he once was.

This is a real shame.

Yeah at this point Rose has to take the safer long term route. Can't take any risks given his overall injury issues.

Rough for Rose and the Bulls.

Pacers and Heat really primed to clash at the top of the east this year.

Officially out for the year.

If you're a fan of basketball, this is the type of news that just makes your stomach sink.

Hope for a speedy recovery.
