This certainly sounds familiar.

I do believe we have heard this type of descriptions of Green before.

If Jeff's not a go to player than why did Ainge trade for him?
Look what we gave up for him. A gunner that has been on three different teams since we traded him, and a seven-footer who has never played up to his new contract.

Exactly. Basically because Ainge didn't want to pay Perkins the type of contract he was going to get somewhere, so we would otherwise have let Perkins walk for nothing, Not signing a lumbering, limited 7 footer coming off acl surgery to a long term lucrative deal has proven to be a very smart move in retrospect. Getting anything valuable for him such as Jeff Green and a 1st round draft pick was brilliant. Blowing that 1st round draft pick on Melo was stupid, but you can't do everything right I guess.

Right now Green has fairly decent trade value, while Perk has negative trade value and was almost amnestied this past summer.

I think because of the 'P' word.

I guess OKC had already decided his 'P' wasnt going to be reached on thier team.

Ainge said the same thing last year while we still had Pierce. He has never once hinted at Green being our go to guy or the next Paul Pierce, far from it. He used similar phrases to describe Olynyk shortly after we drafted him, saying he was not a go to player or a top scorer, he was more of a complementary player who will make other guys better.

Is that why they traded Harden as well? I don't think so. It's more about money and not being able to afford everyone who wants a large contract, so they had to make choices. It's also about needing a legit center to defend against the then massive laker front line of Bynum, Odom, and Gasol, and potentially Dwight Howard. OKC failed on that one.

I respect Ainge's honesty, but I don't know if I'd be so open about it. It can't help any potential trade talks or Green's confidence for that matter.

I think Ainge hopes that other GMs see Green not as a terrible #1 option, but as a great 3rd or 4th option.  Ainge wants others to see him as an all-around player -- a guy who can defend, a guy who can pass, drive and shoot, and who will occasionally win a game for you with a clutch drive/shot or go off and score 30.  Ainge wants them to know that JG is worth 10M a year and is value at that price.   He doesn't want them looking at him as the #1 guy who can't cut it.
His comments are a positive player review if your expectations for him are realistic.

Jeff Green is a really good #2 or 3 option and he should stay. He was never advertised as more when he came here. Too many overreactions on this forum. He is a really good player. Anybody who says he is average is not paying attention to his play or his stats. I feel like people want a scapegoat fans this year  who scream "You're not Paul Pierce!!" at him every time he has an off game and completely ignore the fact that everybody else is playing bad as well.

There's nobody past Melo that's really lighting up the league anyway. And if we want to talk retrospective, Green also got us a second-rounder that we used to make the Courtney Lee S&T happen, and Lee seems to have decided to start playing well again, so there's that.

I agree with both f your points. Nobody after Melo has really done anything yet, so no big loss in that respect, and yes, the second rounder that helped us get Lee was useful too.

Absolutely money was a factor.

They also obviously decided Jeff Green wasnt worth the money it would take to keep him and Perk was. They were wrong on both counts but at least adressed a need by getting Perk.

I think the Harden situation was a miscalculation and he was not happy about not starting. He wanted to start and they were using him as a 6th man. I dont think they knew how good he was in the limited role. Also with Durant and Westbrook there were not enough touches. Anyway, I think they undervalued him. Just my opinion.

He looks like a superstar when defenses give him wide open 3's and straight paths to the rim.  He struggles to create shots if this isn't the case.  Unless we are playing Miami, of course.

Physically the ability is there, it's not between the ears though as I see it.  He is athletic enough just doesn't bring it every night with a sense of urgency.

He's well known as one of the premium bs artists around the league.  He's an absolute shark and puts the interests of the franchise above all thing- including his dignity.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.
