DeMarcus Cousins has reached agreement on a four-year, $62 million maximum contract extension with the Sacramento Kings, a league source told Yahoo Sports.

Quote
Cousins deal will include no early termination option, which could've been possible after the third year of the deal, a source said.

Isn't that the same deal Kevin Love got? Without the opt-out?

I don't know why Sacramento gave D.Cousins the max. There is no reason to give him the max at this stage. Just wait until next summer. He would be a restricted free agent anyway. What they gave him would be the maximum he could get then, right? What is there to gain by giving him this deal now? Just wait and reevaluate the situation in 9 months time. No need to jump the gun.

Especially not for an erratic (and volatile) performer who has yet to show himself capable of leading his team to improved W-L records. Unnecessary.

Yeah, only reason is to try and get Cousins head in the right place and off his next contract.

I don't see this working out well for them.

Yeah. Even if that's the Kings' thinking, his needing a max contract to "get his head in the right place" is actually a pretty good reason to NOT give him a max contract.

I'd say he's worth about as much as Kevin Love.

Which is not to say that Cousins should've landed this contract.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

I agree with you completely about him not deserving this deal - and that waiting would be prudent.

But regarding the Love comparison, it's not quite valid because a max contract is often not a market price, and for very good players is actually less than what they'd receive in a free market.

As an example, just because Durant got a max deal, it doesn't necessarily mean that Paul George isn't worth one too, even though Durant is a far superior player. It could just mean that Durant is worth a heck of a lot more than the max.

While I agree with you that he hasn't earned a max deal yet I can see the reasoning in giving him one now rather than next summer. Getting it done now sends a pretty clear message that the new ownership group believes in him and wants him in SAC for the foreseeable future. For an emotional guy that can really inspire some sense of duty and certainly boost confidence.

I'm not really into the idea of giving a max deal to a career 16/10 guy but Cousins is really still young and no one argues about his potential. Cousins has the potential to turn a franchise around and that is why they are trying to make him happy. I get it and I'd have probably made the same moves.

They must have come to the conclusion that they would match any FA offer sheet he signed and decided to just give it to him now. (assumed he'd get offered the max by some team)

Or they believe that he would feel dissed if they waited to test the market, and would then leave with them getting little to nothing in return.

That would also fall into the category of "reasons he should not have gotten an extension" IMO.

It'll be interesting to see whether Shaq gets involved in his development somehow.

I agree with this. Also, doesn't max contract differ from team to team? Like the amount of years determine what their "max" worth is?

I just think he'd get an offer sheet he'd sign, talented bigs always seem to get offer sheets. (Well Pekovic didn't I guess hmmm)

Yeah, but what I was thinking is that if Sac matched he'd be disgruntled. Given his immaturity that might be worse than letting him go.

I live in Sac for what it's worth and have been to a few games, as well as following the Kings in the local media. I an extremely down on Cousins. In the games I've seen in person, I don't think I've ever seen a player so openly indifferent (on the court but especially on the bench), or obviously disliked by his teammates. There are also a ton of minor little things Cousins does that show his immaturity and are discussed in local media but are probably not big enough stories for the national news.

I could be wrong of course, I'm no GM. We'll see.
