DeAndre isn't without his flaws, but he has strengths, too.

Pros to DJ: Athletic, healthy, rim protector, rebounder at both ends, shoots 64% from field (product of taking shots close to the rim, dunks, putbacks, alleyoops etc), low foul-rate for big man (3.4 per 36)

Cons to DJ: Free throw shooting, awareness issues at times (young player), no shooting range

The West is loaded with froncourt players and combos and I needed to make sure I had a player to help defend them. My bigs each have their own place on offense, too. They can both run the floor, Ibaka has the shooting range, Jordan can bang down low to establish position for offensive boards, putbacks, or lobs. My team is being built on defense first that leads to transition offense. Having two defensive minded bigs that can run the floor is an important part of that strategy.

I think Deandre Jordan is a fine fit alongside your team, but I'm curious in seeing if anyone else in the entire round even considered this dude.

I don't disagree that it was early to take him, but I couldn't find any trade offers I liked. Also, there are a lot of teams in the East who need big men and he was one of the better ones left available. My next pick isn't until 5.10 so thats 35 picks that would have to pass before I'd have a chance again. I didn't want to miss out on him because I have to contend with all these front courts defensively.
I'm shocked that you didn't go the same route as the real life Heat. Get journeyman big men next to your star one and have LBJ play PF with shooting.

Its been a proven winning formula two years running now IRL.

I considered it, but have you seen the Western Conference frontcourts?

Gasol/Nowitzki, Duncan/West, Randolph/Hibbert/Lee, Jefferson/Gortat, Monroe/Bogut, Howard, Love, Griffin, Pekovic.

I don't mind LBJ defending the 4 in some of those matchups in which case Ibaka is my 5. But some of these players are behemoths and it forced me to change my strategy to ensure I wouldn't get overmatched down low. I just tried to pick big men that could complement LeBron and eachother well - and I think I did that.

Is DeAndre Jordan considered a good defender overall?  Not a leading question, I really haven't seen enough to say.

Wouldn't consider him great by any means, but he's certainly above average. Great help defender, knows how to use his athleticism to protect the rim, and he's pretty quick on his feet. The only drawbacks are that he's still improving on reducing contact, and he still needs to learn how to apply his strength better to solidify his positioning.

I have found him to be a below average man defender in the paint and a horrific pick and roll defender. His blocks seemingly come from a lot of weak side helping down low. He is a very good defensive rebounder though.

No I don't think he is. He's a good rebounder, but a bad overall defender.

So as of now I agree that he isn't a great defender, but I think he has the potential to be a great one. I think having a coach who knows something about basketball might really help him this year.

Hopefully the Rondo Show gets here in the next two minutes

Oh yeah he has a ton of potential. His bad habits are all that's holding him back from being a + defender, even if he doesn't ever grasp the spacing and movement necessary for elite defensive work.
