On Rondo's injury update

On Sullinger's injury update

Thursday, May 23 2013

The lesson in patience should be completed by the end of the summer. By his calculations, Sullinger’s 50 percent and on target to return fully healthy before training camp. “It’s a 10-week process,” said Sullinger. “Every two weeks, we’re going to bump it up 10 percent. By September or October, I’ll be 100 percent to go full. About two weeks ago, I met with the doctor. He said it’s a full go. Our medical staff — [strength and conditioning coach] Bryan Doo, [head trainer] Ed Lacerte — we’re just taking it slow. You don’t want to go right into the pounding, so every two weeks it’s just 10 percent bumping it up.” WEEI.com

So it looks like Rondo is not coming back on time but for most people its ok, as we are rebuilding and there is no reason to rush him back. I was hoping the Celtics surprise or even stun its own fans and make it into the playoffs this upcoming season. But without a healthy and capable Rondo and unsurity as to what our backup point guards in Bradley/Pressey/Brooks can bring, prob little to nil chance we make it into the playoffs.

I'am highly optimistic though about Sullingers ability to be back as soon as trainning camp starts. The paragraph above plus no recent updates of setbacks are all good signs.

So likely without Rondo at the start of the year, who will start at pg??

Bradley - With Lee by his side last season, at times they overwhelemed and dominated defensively. Just watch past games of guys like Stephen Curry who at times could barely get the ball past midcourt. But the offense did suffer on several occasions, and by the end of the year/playoffs the duo really struggled. I think both ran out of gas, especially Bradley.  Bc of excellent defense and being most NBA experienced out of Pressey/Brooks there is a good chance he is the starting pg by opening night. A relieve to him is that the celtics have excellent passers all over the court, from Jeff Green, Sullinger and Olynyk.

Pressey - The bad = Tries to do too much, single handedly carry the offense and plays wild which leads to turnovers. The Good = exceptional quickness and stamina, considered the best natural passer from 2013 draft and has underrated scoring skills and defensive game.  Game 1 and 2 of the summer leage the bad outweighed the good. By game 3 and on the good outweighed the bad. So this means he is coachable and can progress his game. He was so good the last three summer games that it earned him a 2 year contract. Not bad for a guy that was not even drafted. IMO if he can play more like the last 3 games of the summer leagues, he will be a very good nba calibre player.  It also means even though Bradley starts, eventually Pressey could be the starting pg if the team is "lost" on the offensive end.  Should get a decent amount of time off the bench either way

Brooks - Not a pure pg but he is a very good passer and has capable handles. He has the ability to mix his speed, pull in guys towards him especially bigger guys from underneath the basket and provide an easy pass to the open man for the easy dunk/layup. And unlike both Bradley and unproven Pressey vs nba defense, can create his shot and if your team is struggling to score be the man on offense (which is more likely the case than him passing 10 assist a game). Can't see Brooks getting regular time playing pg, but against certain teams/opponents/situations get chances and be capable to excel.

So without Rondo (pending good news), who will start?? Do you want to see another round of AB and LEE duo causing defensive terror, or instead go more with the traditional route and have AB be the sg and Pressey as the starting pg?? Do you feel confident Brooks handling part time pg duties? Or should the team look towards acquiring/trading for another experienced pg??

On a side note, anyone have any news about Barbosa? I wonder if there is still a chance he will be brought back

IMHO Rondo comes back during training camp, sully as well;

Its just too quiet nowadays we don't get any update on Rondo's injury rehab as much as we like. I think I saw a photo of Rondo chillin in the Cayman Islands and he looks okay to me.
Peavey Bass Player - relearning to play after 10 years sucks;

I don't think we should be taking Paul Pierce's guess as legitimate news on Rondo's recovery timeline.

And we're not bringing Barbosa back. He doesn't really fit the youth movement we have going.

That quote from Pierce was more of a joke and intimating that the Celtics would hold him out to tank, something they did with Pierce in 2007.

Quote
All indications are that he will be back by the start of the season
Rondo 'doing great' in rehab: ESPN reports that Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said things are going well with point guard Rajon Rondo, who is rehabbing from ACL surgery in February. "So far he looks good," Ainge said. "From everything our medical staff has told us, Rondo is doing great and he should be ready by training camp."

“He should be back up here this weekend,” said president of basketball operations Danny Ainge, according to the Boston Herald. “He’s been doing two-a-days in Sarasota, and he’ll be back to start his rehab here for a while. (Wife) Ashley and the kids have been down there for much of the time, so he’s not alone. He seems to be in good spirits, and things are going well.”

Still rehabbing from the torn ACL that prematurely ended his season last year, Bill Duffy, Rondo’s agent, told the Boston Herald the plan calls for Rondo to stage a “100 percent return” by opening night.

“That sounds right,” Duffy told The Herald. “We don’t won’t to put any pressure on him or over-anticipate, but he’s on target.”

My money's on Pressey to be the starting point.

This is the perfect season to get the kid to learn from his mistakes with serious playing time.

He is the only true point we have other than Rondo. Can't wait to see 2 of Pressey/Bradley/Lee on the floor harassing pgs and sgs.

Welcome Pressey: Pitbull #3.

With a new coach, whoever earns it. If Rondo isn't back, he would be fairly quickly, IMHO, and when he did return would instantly become the starter(new coach isn't going to alienate his only star).

My guess is Bradley and Lee would start since they are pretty much the two best guards on the roster after Rondo.

Crawford had replaced Lee toward the end of the season and in the playoffs and has better Assist numbers than any Guard we have besides Rondo & Pressey. Brooks is not that great a passer. He would get double and triple teamed at Providence and would pull a Kobe every time. At PC he had more turnovers than assists.

  • We may as well put Tyrion in at center.

Yup. Crawford is the 3rd best ball-handler on the team that lacks an abundance of ball-handlers.
I like Marcus Smart
