LAS VEGAS – LeBron James' days of playing for Team USA have likely ended.

James, 28, will not play for USA Basketball during the 2014 world championships in Spain and is doubtful to participate in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, a source close to the Miami Heat forward told Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday. USA Basketball executive director Jerry Colangelo also confirmed to Yahoo! Sports he doesn't expect James to play next summer – and doesn't plan to ask him.

James has already won two Olympic gold medals and a bronze in three Olympic appearances that began in 2004.

James has won two gold medals and a bronze in his three Olympics. (AP)"LeBron is going to be three years older during the next Olympics. He will have two older boys. He has a lot to endure with his family," the source told Y! Sports. "He played in three Olympics. Everyone that knows LeBron knows it's always based on a decision at that moment. But if the moment was today, the answer would be no."

I don't blame him.  Giving up every other summer to compete in international competitions just puts a lot of extra strain on his body.  He's done his part for Team USA.  I see nothing wrong with him now focusing exclusively on championships.

I agree. And as the article stated, his kids are getting older and his summers shorter so personally, for him its the right move. Thanks for the last two gold medal wins Lebron.

WOW!!! Did I just thank Lebron James. I suddenly feel like I need a shower!

sad to say but I they may have a hard time winning without him. from the few games i saw he was a real leader, even on that team of all-stars.
makes it  a bit more interesting i guess.

  • GOT IT!!!
Winning a third straight title will be the hardest thing he's ever done and he knows it. He's going to need all the rest he can get this summer.

Funny.  I just saw Colangelo on NBATV the day before saying that Lebron/Melo won't be the best players in 2016, that it'll probably be Durant.

And the next day, Lebron takes a bow.

The bit about rest and strain on family is bunk.  He's about as healthy as they get.  And Kidd played for USA when his body creaked like the Tin Man...

Lebron won't play second fiddle; he'd rather not play.
