We've had our numerous amounts of lovable role players, who've been a part of our legacy. Names along the likes of Eddie House, Michael Pietrus, Leon Powe, Delonte West, etc.

Especially Delonte West.

I'm a huge fan of him, and actually wanted him to come back. I felt that we should've picked him up when the Mavericks waived him. He was always loved in Boston, and seemed to play very well in Beantown compared to other averages in Cavaliers and the Mavericks.

I do believe that he was wrongly justified of being treated badly by the media for the guns. But I don't condone using guns, but I understand people need to protect themselves. My friend got robbed, and killed. I was actually a good friend with Chris Cummings, the college student who was murdered in Old Dominion University. And in that situation, I would've armed myself with a gun, if I had a permit or not.

“Reporters can’t write a sentence—they can’t write a sentence about even a good game—without mentioning something from four years ago,” says West. “There are plenty of players arrested for DUIs, gun charges, this and that. [Meanwhile], they’ve made me into the Terminator.”

“My body is that of a guy who is 24 or 25,” West, who turns 30 on July 26, says seriously. “I think I can play this game 10 more years.”

Not just play this game, he corrects, but play it at a higher level than ever before.

“What I’m excited about is that I haven’t even scratched my prime,” says West. “Just give me a jersey.”

Give him a jersey and he’ll give you everything he’s got. After all, he’ll be playing for his name, for his namesake and for love.

“Basketball is all I’ve ever had,” offers West. “I won’t give the media any more excuses.”

It bothers West because he believes coverage of the story has led, at least indirectly, to his 2010 exit from Cleveland, ’11 exit from Boston and ’12 exit from Dallas. It bothers him because he believes it’s hindered his ability to provide for his family. But most of all, it bothers him because it’s compromised his only haven.

“My whole life the court is the one place where people couldn’t laugh at my skin complexion, or the birthmark on my face or the red hair,” says West in a calm voice. “When I played basketball, because I worked so hard, it’s always been the one place where people couldn’t laugh at me.

I think Delonte West does deserve a second chance. But not unless we can trim our roster down. Delonte West definitely has good leadership skills, and was a good presence in the locker room along with the abundance of leaders with him, Pierce, KG, Allen, etc.

I believe in order for this team to truly grow, and rebuild. We need to have a team full of players who hustle, and are scrappy. It proves they have heart, and being a leader on and off the court by playing hard ball IS INFECTIOUS!

Delonte West would be willing to do anything, and if it means playing a couple minutes per game. With 1-2 3's, and solid defense while playing hard. Then he's worth enough for a minimum contract as a PG/SG.

Give him a 10 day contract, nothing else to lose, and if he does well. Give him another 10 day contract. We need more veteran leadership, and I don't agree with the supposedly bad second stint last year. DA just didn't like his gun charges.

Unfortunately, I don't think he'll ever get a second chance due to his gun charges, and the fact Aaron Hernadez and T-Will are all infinitely out of sports talk as of now.

I'd love to give him another chance. My only concern with DWest is he gets injured often.

But as a player, I think he's great (when he's healthy)

As for all the outside the court stuff, I don't even pay attention to it.

I agree, aside from his injuries if Delonte West can manage to stay healthy under well supervised minutes which Stevens can definitely do, (he was one of the best coaches at managing minutes upon every player.) Then I don't see why not.

His gun charges will hold a lot against him in the face of adversity. But if he can prove to shape around, give 7-12 solid minutes, and provide great leadership over the younger players, I can see him flourishing here. A 10 day contract we have nothing to lose.

I would still love to see Shavlik come back though.

No thanks.  The last thing a young team needs is a guy with problems off the court.
Before a game on Christmas against the Pacers, Bird told Chuck Person that he had a present for him. During the game, Bird shot a 3-pointer in front of Person. Immediately after releasing the ball, Bird said to Person, "Merry F!#*ing Christmas!" and then the shot went in.

i fail to see how we could even think about having this discussion on west without first dealing with the source of his problem - his bipolar disorder. to simply bring in west's side and his view, as was done above, leaves out key points that are crucial to this discussion.

on the gun arrest, west wasn't just carrying "a gun." he had, to quote the policeman who arrested west:

"a Prince George's County police spokesman, said West was carrying a Beretta 9mm handgun, a Ruger .357 magnum handgun, and a Remington 870 shotgun. "

to frame west's situation as carrying a gun as a form of "protection" is misleading since he had a mini-arsenal. such a discussion on protection also misses the point of what being bipolar can do to some people when they stop taking their medications and therapy. many of them become subject to delusions or illusions.

i am not a medical doctor, but i have read enough about west to know there is more to the story than his version given above.

west has a long, documented record of mental disorders. disorders that require vigilant and continuing monitoring, medication, and therapy...for life. i know people with similar conditions, this is a life of hell for some people.

what is key here is that west has a pattern of NOT following through, which is not unusual for many such sufferers.

at the risk of piling on poor delonte, whom i liked as a celtic, this behavior is not only about "DUIs, gun charges, this and that"...it is very much about his failure to keep up his medical regime. that is, bad choices that have harmed him and those around him.

how bad? "West has made more than $14 million in his career, but during the lockout he sold off his cars, jewelry, and was living in the Mavericks locker room for a while...."

the man has not yet demonstrated that he is in consistent control of his terrible condition. i sincerely hope he does what is correct and gets back into the nba.

but the opening of this thread would be well served to consider more fully the sources of west's problems and his history of actions. then a more interesting conversation can begin.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

I would love him back as the main backup point guard.

Since we have Kris Humphries and Gerald Wallace in our team, who both LOOKS like locker room problems (or off-court adversities), I don't see why we shouldn't give Delonte West another chance!  :P

He doesn't seem to really fit the need here.  If we had elected to bring back PP and KG and were going to give it one last go, I think he would have made perfect sense to backup Rondo.  But if we are going to tank--or at best, be mediocre--do we really need to bring him in from a PR/team distraction problem?  I can't imagine Wyc signs off on it.

regarding his bipolar:

Usually you have to hit rock bottom or experience an incredible low point before you start taking the illness seriously.

It's too bad. Back in the day I thought delonte was the better out of OUR last 2 picks in the 04' draft.

We can't court a team of all combo and shooting guards... I do hope Delonte gets on with another team.

I think Indiana would be a good spot for him, though they should also bring in a more natural PG.

I would LOVE to get Delonte back in here.  He is 30 now and could be a very valuable asset to this team now and in 3 years when we are a contender again.  His work ethic, hustle and focus on the court are second to none.  People make it out like he is a bad locker room guy - but the fact is that he was loved as a teammate here in Boston.  BRING BACK REDZ!

Yes, the Celtics need someone to take those fifth-string shooting guard minutes away from Keith Bogans.
