I love Sully.
But if you think he could get us either of these guys you are seriously divorced from reality.
Again, if we offered Rondo, Sully and a pick DETROIT SAYS NO!!!!!
Imagine that Sullinger is averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds per game through January, while it becomes clear that you cannot put Drummond and Monroe on the floor together at the same time. That's the key
if in my scenario. If they can play the two of them together, then there's no chance of a trade, but if they look a bad fit because you can't play two bigs who are worthless away from the basket on offense, then Detroit has to explore trade options. (My scenario also assumes that Olynyk looks like a future starting power forward, not a guy who can't start due to poor rebounding and defense.)
Detroit would certainly consider shopping one of them for another player. If the Celtics offer is Sullinger and a future first, would other teams easily beat that offer or would it be competitive?
You also have to consider that Monroe will be a restricted free agent after this season. Will the Pistons give Monroe a huge contract or match an offer sheet if they think Drummond will be the eventual starter at center?
The Celtics will actually be able to manufacture cap space in the summer of 2014 to sign a max guy, so maybe they can offer to overpay Monroe with a contract the Pistons won't match. The threat of a team being able to do that has to weigh on the minds of the Detroit front office.
