The great thing about Oden is that he satisfies the tanking and non tanking crowds. If he is ready immediately and 100% healthy he can start for us and be a building block of the future, if he won't be ready by the time the season starts then we are in the lottery and getting a high pick. Win/Win

Or, he helps them win too many games to make the lottery--then blows out his knee for another two years.

I would love to see Oden start his road back to the NBA with the Celtics this year. Playing with Rondo, Stevens, a storied franchise and zero expectations seems like a great environment for his recovery. He'd get minutes in a fresh system with young teammates and we have some of the best doctors and conditioning folks in the league.

Hopefully all those things are important to him. If he burns out, so be it. It's been an offseason of risks already, signing Oden only makes sense.

I don't mean to be a negative nancy, but I have questions.

Imagine you are Greg Oden. You have no real loyalties to any team (except Portland and maybe a hometown team like Indiana or Cleveland). The world champion Miami Heat featuring the best basketball player alive want you to come play short minutes under zero pressure while hanging and training for a few years with a bunch of living legends. By the way, no one will ever point a camera at you unless you happen to be standing next to Lebron James.

OR

You can go to a small city in the Northeast that is somehow populated almost entirely by sportswriters and commentators who, thanks to Danny Ainge, have no one else interesting to talk about. They will dedicate several hours every single day on the radio and in print to dissecting your every move, questioning your heart, hashing and rehashing whether or not you are a "bust," wondering aloud how old you are, whether you deceived Blazers doctors back in the day, whether you are salvageable, whether you should be traded, what the fact that you once texted someone a photo of your junk means about your character, etc etc etc. You can have the starter job, if you're up to it, and do what you will. By the way, Your coach is a rookie, none of your teammates know much of anything except for the dude in the knee brace playing connect four, and half of your fans kinda want you to lose.

Friends, from everything we've read about the guy, he'd really like to be out of the spotlight while he gets his career back together. Don't be upset when Greg Oden chooses to play elsewhere.

How is playing for the defending champions (who have a major hole at center) zero pressure?

That would be super high pressure.  And I guarantee there would be plenty of cameras pointed at him, and every time they are national TV (which is a lot), there will be stories about him.

If he wants to come back slowly, and rebuild his career, then he is much better off doing it in Boston or Dallas, where there really will be no pressure, because those teams won't be trying to win now (well, not sure about Dallas there, but certainly Boston).  Those teams can focus on letting him come back slowly, and building towards the rest of his career.

I agree that he will likely chose to play elsewhere, although I don't agree that playing in Miami would be a "no pressure, no spotlight" situation. I'm sure there would be a ton of discussion about when is he ready, the heat need a real center, and if he screws up or gets re-injured, media will be all over him.

In boston, there really is no pressure. We are not contending and he can have a full 2 years playing small minutes with no one asking why is he not ready. Ready for what? We are not contending! Plus, we can pay him more than Miami can.

I think in the end his best choice imo is the Spurs. He gets the chance to win a ring there as well, gets just as much spotlight as in Miami, but is not needed on the team with Duncan and Splitter still there, so he can take his time and play short minutes while learning from one of the best big men ever.

Maybe in Boston, Greg Oden will feel the pressure of the low bar of looking better than Fab Melo to avoid criticism.

I think his ideal situation is a team where there is no need for him to start and which is very likely to give him at least until January 2015 if he has a disappointing next season.

I just think you're wrong on this, Chris. There is always huge media and fan scrutiny in Boston. The Miami Heat, on the other hand, can barely sell out the arena for a playoff game featuring one of the best players ever in his prime.

Oden would be a candle standing next to two floodlights and a supernova- and the basketball fans who are actually interested will be watching from the other side of the galaxy.

There will be human interest stories about him in the national media, just like there were about Birdman, Eddy Curry, and the others, but that's a far cry from the crap he'd get in Boston, win or lose.

Oden is only 25.  He's only a few years older than Oly.  He's younger than Green and Rondo.  I'd love to have him.

We don't know if Rondo will ever be healthy again.

We don't know if Sully will ever be rid of his back troubles.

If Oden looks healthy... sign him!

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
we'd have to nurse him in slowly while we tank because he'd add a few wins to the season which I don't want at all.
Works well though because if we lock him in for 3 or 4 years on the cheap, then we can monitor his legs/injuries and rest him immediately if something comes up.
Worth the gamble on a 3 year deal. Maybe 2 years with team option or something.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

It'd be an improvement over our current center depth.

If we could get Oden on a incentive based contract I'm 100% for it.  I have always really liked Oden, he has had unfortunate luck.  He would be leagues best C right now if he was healthy.

This is how Id want it.  Otherwise pass.  We already have 3 center projects.

Colt Iverson has more basketball ahead of him than Oden.   Besides a guy named Oden might be afraid of Hernandez in Boston-JK.

With our luck he would play unbelievably, lead us to a playoff berth, only to get injured in playoffs and never play for us again.

No lottery pick, no elite center.

We got burnt once going for Oden maybe Karma has our back this time. Sign him, we have no true center. Fab is Flab so bring in Greg and see if he's healthy enough to contribute and possibly develop
