I still don't see how this save them $30 million.  Three times his salary would be $23.19 million.

Again, luxury tax + repeater offenses.

Repeater rate doesn't kick in until next year.

$30m would be about what would have been saved by amnestying MWP if Dwight Howard had come back to the Lakers.  It's less because they aren't as far over the tax threshold without Howard, but someone may have taken the $30m number and not realized it can change.

I thought the Lakers were already in luxury tax hell for quite a while.

I REALLY hate how everybody continues to call him Metta World Peace, like it's normal. MWP is just not a real name and he isn't good enough anymore to have a stage name. Artest will end up with some mid-range contender as a back-up giving some good minutes. Good move by the Lakers.

He legally changed it.  It's his name.  I don't care who he is, we should respect his name.

Really.  It's up to you whether you see it in the same class as Lew Alcindor changing his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or professional wrestler Jim Hellwig legally changing his name to Warrior.  (If you see a difference, that is.)

I wonder if one of the under the cap teams would even want a distraction like Artest.  If he isn't claimed, he could be the missing piece for a contender, at a minimum salary.  I wonder if Chicago or the Spurs would want another guy to throw at Lebron. Would Indy want to deal with him again?  Probably not.

I could see him on the Knicks, or maybe he will stay in LA with the Clippers.
