There was a whole bunch of years there between Bird and Pierce where I thought it really dumb for there to have been a team captain.

We might be entering another phase of Celtic lore where maybe its best not to have a team captain rather than having marginal players like Rick Fox, Dee Brown, Dana Barros, Pervis Ellison and Antoine Walker be captains.

If a couple years from now Rondo or Sully or someone else has proven he is an all-time Celtic great and is a proven leader, then sure, make them captain. Until then, do the Celtics really need to give out that title?

No, but there's a de facto captain on a team anyway. Only if that player is among the team's best and most experienced does it make sense, IMO, to officially name him captain.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism

That was a rough time for captains, but Antoine shouldn't be on your list. He actually was a leader who was on this team for many years and his teams were successful. While I agree that sometimes it is best not to have a captain, your captain also doesn't need to be on the legendary level of Bird/Pierce.

In Forsbergs piece, he mentions Sully and Lee and Green and I think Bradley as taking offense to the tanking talk.  They were at the summer league games.

Did anyone find it weird that Bass wasnt mentioned at all?

I have never been a fan of "captains" on basketball teams.  I think Pierce was an exception, that probably had some internal politics involved.

But, I absolutely think Sully is going to be a leader, as early as this year.  He just has that natural leadership ability that you can't teach.  I think this is a big reason why he is sitting on the bench of the summerleague team.  They want him to be a leader, and he is embracing the role.

Bass couldn't be reached for comment, he is too busy eating.
