exactly. If Sully can improve his lateral quickness to the pt of rarely getting burnt, anybody in the nba has a chance also.

Olynyk is a smart guy and capable, he will get it.

I totally disagree.  Ojapido scored on him on a fast break.  Not many guys will stop him on a fast break, period!!  The kids is going to be very good.  Also, Nicholson should have been called for three straight offensive fouls for lowering the shoulder into Oly and then into his jaw on that ONE play.  That was bull crap from the refs.  Kelly played above average defense IMHO today!!

You can disagree all you want but six fouls means he was struggling to stay with his man.  I didn't say he was not going to be good.   This was his first game.   I expected him to have to make adjustments.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I can again draw comparisons to Sullinger who was struggling in the same way early.  Not used to the speed, fouling too frequently.

I dont think sully improved his quickness but sharpened his rotations and ability to be where he is supposed to on defense. That it only took him about a half a season to pick up the rotations gives me hope for olynyk.

Now this is also showing the impatience of people. Melo has been playing ball for what? Around 8 years? Only the last 5 at a high level. The guy first had to grow into his body. Then when he did, it grew a little too much, so he had to get in shape. And then learn how to play with that new body.

No offense, but some day Fab Melo is going to be forty and we're going to still be posting on this board saying things like "Be reasonable- Melo has only been playing basketball for 25 years! Most guys his age have played ever since they were little kids!"

He's never going to get those years back!!! They're irrelevant now! He's coming into his physical prime. He needs to be able to play basketball very very soon if he's going to make it.

I think you've proved my point about impatience...No offense.:P

Larranaga wants Kelly Olynyk to be more aggressive offensively

Celtics summer league coach Jay Larranaga lauded Kelly Olynyk's 25-point performance in Sunday's 95-88 loss to the Orlando Magic. But he does want the team's first-round pick to take more than 12 shots in 27 minutes.

"I think Kelly's very, very skilled," Larranaga said. "He can shoot. He can pass. He can dribble. He plays defensively. He talks. One of his biggest strengths is how well he talks the game and how he stays connected to his teammates. He's got to shoot when he's open. He had some shots that he turned down and he's such an unselfish player, we need to keep encouraging him to shoot when he's open.

More Sullinger: "Everyone’s talking about how we’re going to tank + how we’re going to do this. We just want to play and shut everybody up."

_____
Thats what i'am talking about. No freaking tanking allowed. This is the Boston Celtics

Shhh. Don't tell indeedproceed that. That's not his pick, so he shouldn't be praised.

He will end up liking him like people ended up liking Sully. He scored 25 points and Jay was not 100 pleased that he wasn't even more aggressive.  Kelly could of scored 40 tonight , if he were a little bit more aggressive and selfish

I'm not sure what you mean. The Sullinger pick was a lovefest from the very beginning, to the extent to which people still ignore that he still averages more than 6 fouls per 48 minutes.

Most of those fouls are a combination of him doing his job and him not getting respect from refs, which happens for most non-lottery rookies. Maybe 2 of those fouls are worthy of your contempt. Maybe.

The posturing is unnecessary here. Regardless of how those fouls are earned, the fact that he can't currently stay on the floor for extended minutes is a real issue. Perhaps this is going to get better, but until it does, sweeping it under the rug isn't doing anyone a favor.

Actually I would argue that it is doing people a favor. It's keeping us optimistic about the future. Assuming Sullinger returns from his injury 100% (which he has said many times he will), then we have ourselves a very nice starting PF in this league. The fouls will improve with time, just like his defense did... very rapidly, at that. Being negative is what's not doing anyone any favors (ignore my terrible grammar).

... but back to the comparison with Olynyk. Not that my opinion matters much, but I felt the same way about both picks. On draft night, I was bummed that we didn't take someone else (PJIII, Schroeder, younameit), but they soon started proving me wrong. They both still have a lot of proving to do, though.

Foul troubles? Big deal. Truly a meaningless thing to harp on for a rookie.

Remember BBD as a rookie? The guy would practically enter the game with 2 fouls. Guys learn how to play better defense and set better picks and those things improve. To care about the foul rate of a rookie is to go digging for things to criticize.

Actually that a number of the fouls were 'rookie fouls' does matter--because he is no longer a rookie.
